Job Description We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate veterinary leader to oversee and grow our mentorship program—someone who finds joy not just in healing animals, but in guiding and inspiring the next generation of veterinary professionals. The Director of Veterinary Mentorships oversees all aspects of the veterinary mentorship programs, including program development and creation of medical protocols. They ensure the delivery of high-quality, humane, and efficient veterinary care, including high-volume spay/neuter, shelter medicine, and community wellness. This position also contributes to the strategic planning and expansion of veterinary mentorship initiatives and related programs. Qualifications: • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree, • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Texas, or ability to become licensed, • Current DEA License, • Experience in shelter medicine and HQHV S/N, • Competitive salary starting at $180,000, commensurate with experience level, • Veterinary license and association membership dues expenses, PLIT insurance, and annual CE allowance, • Generous PTO and 10 paid holidays, • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, • 403(b) retirement plan with up to 6% match, • Relocation assistance, • A fun, friendly, and supportive work environment REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the VP of Lifesaving Programs POSITION OVERVIEW: The Director of Veterinary Mentorships oversees all aspects of the veterinary mentorship programs, including program development and creation of medical protocols. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, humane, and efficient veterinary care, including high-volume spay/neuter, shelter medicine, and community wellness. This position contributes to the strategic planning and expansion of veterinary mentorship initiatives and related programs. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Veterinary Mentorship Responsibilities • Implement and oversee all medical protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Veterinary Mentorship Program in alignment with industry standards (e.g., ASV Guidelines, AVMA, state board regulations), • Oversee buildout of surgical suite, providing input on procurement of medical supplies, equipment, and facility improvements, • Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and demonstrate model surgical practices, • Perform other surgical procedures when deemed appropriate for adoptability and/or quality of life (i.e., wound repair, mass removal, amputations, etc.), • Provide hands-on training to mentees on spay/neuter and other soft tissue procedures, overseeing 10+ trainees per rotation and 1,200+ surgeries per month., • Provide oversight on all aspects of the procedures including surgical flow, anesthesia, pain management, and recovery, • Develop curriculum and facilitate clinical rotations for 4th year veterinary students, • Design, implement, and continually update training curriculums focused on HQHV spay/neuter surgical techniques and best practices., • Ensure training aligns with current veterinary medical standards, safety protocols, and ASV guidelines and complies with all applicable laws and regulations, • Monitor trainee progress, provide constructive feedback, and conduct evaluations to ensure competency., • Maintain accurate records of training sessions, participant progress, and surgical outcomes, • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records, controlled substance logs, and program reports, • Collaborate with other veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and administrative staff to coordinate training logistics, schedules, and case load., • Serve as a clinical role model, demonstrating efficiency, compassion, and attention to detail., • Foster a supportive learning environment that promotes skill development and confidence., • Collaborate with VP of Lifesaving Programs to manage and oversee budget for mentorship programs, including evaluation and recommendations of medical purchases., • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to strategic planning for program expansion and improvement., • Provide regular reports to both internal and external leadership on program performance, challenges, and opportunities for growth., • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in HQHV spay/neuter and shelter medicine., • Attend conferences and pursue CE opportunities relevant to shelter medicine, surgical training and mentorship., • Share knowledge and promote a culture of continuous improvement within the organization., • Analyze operational data and trends to improve outcomes and increase efficiency., • Strengthen relationships with veterinary schools, professional associations, and collaborative animal welfare networks., • Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to any Manager or above immediately., • Reports any unsafe working conditions to any Manager or above immediately., • Maintains client, donor, volunteer, and staff confidentiality at all times., • Follows SOPs and other safety regulations at all times., • Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy., • Attends staff meetings., • Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor. Education and Experience Requirements • Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent., • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas, or ability to become licensed, • In good standing with federal and state licensing boards and has a valid DEA license, • At least three (3) years’ experience practicing shelter medicine, • At least three (3) years’ experience in performing and teaching HQHV SN techniques, • Proven experience in curriculum development and overseeing surgical mentorship programs a plus, • Fear Free & USDA Certified, or willing to become certified, • Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment., • Supports Operation Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization., • Proven knowledge of animal behavior and illnesses., • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills., • Proven ability to effectively manage a team., • Proven ability to manage multiple projects at a time and work well under pressure., • Must be eligible to be a driver for Operation Kindness., • Is able to work equally well with paid staff members, clients, and volunteers., • Is able to relate well to persons with varied backgrounds and beliefs. Working Conditions: May be exposed to chemicals, unpleasant odors, noises, confining workspaces, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal diseases.
