The Opportunity The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley exposes students to our different programs with the intention to help them develop as public interest attorneys. Each law clerk is assigned to a supervising attorney who will provide constructive feedback in a positive learning environment. The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley’s Children & Youth program advances the legal rights of young people in Santa Clara County, empowering them to lead healthy and productive lives. We listen to, advise, and advocate for our clients to ensure their voices are heard, and their rights are protected. What You’ll Do After a training program consisting of written materials and staff lectures, the Law Clerk will apprentice with an attorney. Under the attorney’s supervision, the Law Clerk will be responsible for providing direct legal assistance and representation to clients. The Opportunity We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Community Health Advocate to join the Health Program at Law Foundation. The Health Program is dedicated to providing free legal advice and representation to individuals in Santa Clara County who identify as living with mental health disabilities. We also provide free legal help to patients of Valley Homeless Health Program, SCVMC Valley Specialty Center Clinics, Valley Health Center Downtown Clinic, Gender Health Center, and to individuals experiencing homelessness in Santa Clara County. The Community Health Advocate works to incorporate community-driven advocacy and other race equity tools to provide a holistic approach to health services and advocacy. The team is responsible for screening potential clients requesting services from the Law Foundation. Community Health Advocates have significant contact with the community. Community Health Advocates investigate and document what is happening in the community, transmit legal knowledge to community members, and identify and initiate policy campaigns and impact litigation for the health program. They have a significant influence in directing the work of the Health team. What You’ll Do As Community Health Advocate you will: • Interview clients by telephone or in person to determine eligibility for services, • Gather information and data to verify eligibility for services, summarize prospective clients’ legal problems, and document requests for service, • Consult with attorneys and advocates regarding cases, and provide counsel and advice to clients with attorney supervision, • Lead outreach efforts for various Health Team practices (such as Medi-Cal enrollment) including but not limited to legal clinics, Know Your Rights Presentations, and representing the Law Foundation at various community events., • Provide clients with legal information and referrals to community resources, • Attend and monitor community meetings, events, and outreaches that concern or impact clients and provide public education when necessary, • Check in with supervisors, attorneys, and advocates regularly, • Prepare demographic data and other reports, • Assist with fundraising activities, • Provide brief legal services under the supervision of an attorney including drafting legal demand letters and preparing court paperwork as needed, • Provide and/or support representation of clients for administrative hearings, • Engage in policy advocacy pertaining to the social determinants of health and health equity matters, including mental health advocacy, unhoused advocacy, and public benefits; attend local and state policy meetings and provide oral and/or written testimony, • Help to organize and engage community members in policy campaigns, • Investigate potential legal claims and systemic issues including research, writing, public record reviews, document reviews, interview clients and witnesses, and in-person surveying, • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure a seamless and people-centered approach to service delivery., • Engage in all aspects of case management on behalf of clients, • Client interviews with children and young adults in the field and at office site, • Legal research and writing assignments, as needed by attorneys., • Participate in regular meetings with LACY and Law Foundation staff, • Client intake responsibilities, • Participate in general office upkeep duties, including computer data entry of client and service provider contacts, • Opportunities for court appearances will be offered to certified law students, as appropriate Requirements: Job Requirements • Bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Vietnamese is strongly preferred, • Strong interviewing skills and the desire to interact with many people on a daily basis, • Experience with or general knowledge of issues affecting people with disabilities and low-income people, • Commitment to the rights of individuals with disabilities and low-income individuals, • Experience working with and/or sensitivity to underrepresented communities, including people living with mental health disabilities and chronic or life-threatening health conditions or other disabilities, people of diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, people experiencing homelessness, people currently or formerly involved with the criminal justice system, and members of the LGBTQ community, • Strong communication and presentation skills; comfortable presenting new information to various audiences., • Understanding legal concepts and materials, • Ability to handle detail-oriented administrative tasks, • Ability to interact professionally with office staff and clients, • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, • Ability to be flexible, multi-task and take direction from multiple sources, • Experience using Microsoft Office: Access, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, • Candidates of diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, persons living with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ community encouraged to apply, • Education: BA or BS preferred., • Awareness of how race and other identities shape our work with communities; commitment to inclusion and belonging., • Alignment with the mission and values of LFSV. This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to Managing Attorney The annual salary range for this role is $63,500 to $88,000. We are committed to supporting the well-being, growth, and professional development of our team members. Please note that the Community Health Advocate will be expected to work in our San Jose office a minimum 2 days per week in office with a possibility of some weeks requiring 5 days in-office and/or in-field (depending on need). Employees must be California State residents. Due to logistical challenges regarding taxes, insurance, and time zones, we are not able to consider staff in other states at this time.
