Job DescriptionPosition Summary The Ski & Bike Patrol Director oversees operations for both the Winter Ski Patrol and Summer Bike Patrol departments. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety of guests and staff on the mountain during both winter and summer seasons, coordinating daily patrol operations, and supervising a team of ski and bike patrollers. The Director leads emergency response efforts, facilitates staff training, manages compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and works to ensure a positive guest experience while fostering a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. In coordination with Hilltop management, the Director develops and implements patrol procedures, policies, budgets, training programs, and overall safety strategies. This position also plays a key role in cultivating a positive work culture and mentoring future leaders within the patrol team. This is a 10-month position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Mountain Safety & Patrol Operations • Lead daily ski and bike patrol operations, including snow safety, trail inspections, and hazard mitigation., • Respond to on-mountain emergencies, coordinate rescues, patient care, lift evacuation, and documentation., • Act as Incident Commander and coordinate with EMS or other emergency agencies until relieved of incident command duties., • Organize and conduct daily patrol briefings, providing clear directions on responsibilities and safety protocols., • Manage trail status, lift safety observations, and patrol sweeps., • Ensures that the hill is clear, safe, and ready to open before the public is on the slopes at Hilltop Ski Area. Ensure that no public remains on slopes or trails at the end of the day or during closures. Keeps and maintains records of any incidents on the hill., • Monitor and enforce guest safety policies, including the Skier Responsibility Code, providing warnings or removing guests as needed., • Maintain and oversee patrol equipment, medical supplies, vehicles, and rescue gear, ensuring readiness at all times., • Conduct incident investigations and lead safety initiatives to reduce guest and employee injuries., • Collaborate with the Director of Mountain Operations to immediately report serious incidents or ambulance calls., • Works with the Hilltop Medical Director for protocol review and continuing education., • Maintain intimate knowledge of mountain terrain, weather conditions, traffic flow, and potential hazards., • Gives warnings and works with resort leadership for the removal of guests for policy and safety violations., • Marks unsafe areas, and opens and closes areas depending on snow, snowmaking, grooming operations, and events., • Recruit, hire, schedule, train, mentor, and evaluate 10-20 person patrol staff, • Foster a positive, team-oriented work culture to encourage retention, growth, and leadership development., • Develop and implement online and in-person training programs, policies, and standard operating procedures for patrol staff., • Conduct employee evaluations, counseling, and disciplinary actions to ensure compliance with company and safety standards., • Work with the Director of Mountain Operations to manage departmental budgets, including labor, operations, capital expenditures, and equipment purchases., • Interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, appraising performance, disciplining, and resolving problems with personnel., • Coordinate with other Hilltop departments and senior leadership to align safety initiatives and guest service goals., • Support overall mountain operations by providing leadership in hazard reduction, daily weather reporting, and trail readiness., • Identify opportunities to improve guest experience and increase revenue across patrol and bike programs., • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure seamless year-round mountain safety and guest satisfaction.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities), • Minimum of 5 years of combined Ski and Bike Patrol experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role preferred., • Prior experience managing teams in outdoor environments preferred, • Current OEC, WEC, EMT-1 or higher medical certification (required)., • Current CPR/AED for Healthcare Provider certification., • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and preventive measures (e.g., HIPAA, infection control)., • Advanced skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking skills; must be able to safely ride all terrain and conditions, including while carrying loads., • Proficiency in rescue and climbing tools/techniques (ropes, carabiners, belaying, friction devices)., • Ability to operate snowmobiles, ATVs, and patient toboggans., • Positive, inclusive leadership style with proven ability to motivate and develop teams., • Strong communication (oral and written), conflict resolution, and guest service skills., • Ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic during emergencies., • Comfortable working with children and adults of all ages., • Able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed., • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check., • Capable of performing duties in extreme weather conditions year-round.
