Position Summary: KIND seeks a Staff Attorney to provide expert legal services to unaccompanied children needing legal representation through zealous direct representation as well as pro bono facilitation, including robust consultation, training, and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who have accepted KIND cases. As needed, supervise Senior Paralegals, Paralegals, interns, and/or other non-attorney staff. The Staff Attorney will report to the Supervising Attorney. This position is contingent upon continued funding. Essential Functions: • Provide both mentoring to KIND pro bono attorneys and direct legal representation to KIND clients., • In the pro bono mentoring function, provide robust consultation and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who have accepted a KIND case., • In the direct representation function, perform ordinary functions of legal counsel including legal research and formulating the legal strategy for the case; conducting client interviews; appearing before immigration and/or state courts or agencies; and drafting and filing court pleadings and applications for benefits., • Supervise interns and/or other non-attorney staff as needed including:, • Onboarding, skills training, daily support and coaching, review and quality assurance of filings, regular check-ins and performance evaluations, and provision of consistent and effective supervision and oversight., • Place cases with pro bono attorneys and actively build relationships between KIND and the pro bono community., • In coordination with KIND’s Training and Technical Assistance Team and the local field office Senior Attorney/s, as needed, help develop pro bono training resources and local training curriculum, including sample filings and guidance packets. With supervision, present trainings to pro bono attorneys and community groups., • Contribute to overall office functioning, including actively participating in field office and KIND-wide calls and meetings, field office and KIND-wide committees, and assisting with office events., • Ensure entry of timely, accurate, and detailed case data into KIND’s case management systems., • Represent KIND at local coalitions, courts, and agencies.Qualifications and Requirements:, • J.D. and admitted to the local state bar (If not admitted to local state bar, must sit for bar exam or start waiver to be admitted within 6 months and be able to be admitted within one year of employment)., • Fluent in English and Spanish (required for direct communication with the children we serve and their caregivers, the majority of whom are Spanish-speaking)., • Minimum of 1 year of experience practicing immigration law, which should include representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas, and T visas., • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, and/or working with vulnerable populations, survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma., • Experience working with law firm attorneys and/or other legal volunteers if the majority of the caseload is working directly with pro bono attorneys., • Strong communication skills., • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (such as Teams, Excel, etc.)., • Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities., • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate., • Ability to multitask and work with a sense of urgency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment., • Committed to practicing and supporting wellbeing and a work-home life balance.

Job DescriptionSalary: $42,931 - $47,225 DOE This position is partially hybrid and will require on-site presence at least 1 full day per week to work at a confidential Seattle location, and potentially more based on the needs. API Chaya supports Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander survivors and families impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as human trafficking survivors from all communities. API Chaya engages communities to change societal conditions that enable domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking and all forms of oppression, especially violence against women and the most vulnerable in our society.We work in diverse communities, including immigrant and refugee, young people, LGBTQ, faith-based, and various ethnic and cultural groups. We are seeking an experienced Immigration Law Attorney who will provide legal consultations, case management, and limited direct representation including presence for court hearings, USCIS or ICE check ins. The attorney will work closely with our direct services team to provide survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking with information about legal processes and options available to them through the civil and criminal legal systems. The attorney should have experience in representing clients in VAWA petitions, T Visas and U Visas. This individual should be aligned with API Chayas mission, vision and values, excel at trauma informed, survivor-centered advocacy, managing competing priorities and facilitating access to services for our clients. Position responsibilities: (~90%) • Legal Advocacy Services for Survivors and Families. Work in partnership with API Chayas survivor advocates and interns to provide culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate legal support services. Screen and provide education and assistance with navigating various legal systems, as well as clients rights, responsibilities and risks when they engage with these systems. Prepare clients' petitions in collaboration with survivor advocates and finalize petitions for filing. Work with clients to prepare them for court appearances and appear in court with clients., • Legal Representation for Survivors and Families. Work with program managers and advocates to triage cases where legal representation would be more critical. Provide representation particularly for limited English proficiency (LEP) survivors, underserved and most vulnerable. Priority will be made to ensure that all clients have access to effective legal services and referrals to existing legal resources continue to be made., • Documentation and Reporting. Maintain up-to-date case records. Complete relevant documentation and reporting of program activities, including monthlyreports and assistance with grant reporting.Attend relevant training and meetings., • Follows Washington state Rules of Professional Conduct and API Chayas client confidentiality policy and other procedures., • Maintain good standing with WA State Bar Association and maintain membership in American Immigration Lawyers Association, • Maintain up to date information regarding emergent changes in immigration law policies and procedures as it relates to family based immigration including adjustment of status, H4 derivatives, VAWA, U and T visa applications, • Develop and maintain strong relationships with strategic partners in key organizations and various communities, • Attend select local, regional and occasionally statewide and national meetings and conferences to ensure API Chaya's perspective and our constituents' needs are represented, • Attend select local, county and occasionally statewide community planning meetings with public funders to promote API Chaya and its services and report on progress and unmet needs, • Conduct trainings, provision of technical assistance, and speaking engagements, • Assist Executive Director with grants proposals, • Attend ongoing trainings to further professional development and stay up-to-date on relevant developments in field, • Liaison with local, state and national organizations and systems when necessary to advocate for trauma-informed, culturally and linguistically responsive legal services, • Other duties as assigned by supervisors Minimum Requirements • Work authorization in the United States, • A license to practice law from Washington State Bar Association, • At least 3 years of professional experience providing direct representation on Immigration law matters such as VAWA, T-visa, deportation, U-visa, visa and/or EAD renewal etc., • Member of American Immigration Legal Association, • WA state drivers license and reliable transportation, • Ability to work independently and demonstrate excellent organizational skills to effectively complete competing priorities and responsibilities while meeting deadlines, • Highly developed awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion, with evolved ability to practice appropriate, relevant and thoughtful strategies for working with diverse populations, • Reliable Internet connection and proficiency in using MS Outlook, Excel, Word and Zoom. As the head of KIND’s local office, the Managing Director, Seattle is a critical member of the management team in KIND’s Legal Services division and is the senior representative of the organization at the local level – effectively engaging government, private sector partners, and community stakeholders to advance KIND’s mission. Managing Directors supervise Senior Attorneys and Managing Attorneys (formerly Supervising Attorneys) as well as other attorney and non-attorney staff as needed. The Managing Director will report to the Regional Director, Legal Services.
