Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting laboratory operations through troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. You will work in a fast-paced environment, ensuring accurate specimen handling, proper documentation, and excellent patient interaction, while adhering to all safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood draws, using straight needles and butterfly needles with consistent, safe technique., • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols., • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy before processing., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, ensuring proper handling to maintain specimen integrity., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure complete accuracy prior to processing., • Package specimens for transport, following all procedures related to temperature control, container selection, and labeling to preserve specimen quality., • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol., • Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in the system, including recording maintenance data and decontamination activities., • Perform and document decontamination procedures and follow established workflows to maintain a clean and safe work area., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and processing steps for each specimen., • Troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency., • Participate in training activities and assist in training others on proper phlebotomy techniques and laboratory procedures as needed., • Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and accurate manner., • Attend annual departmental trainings and remain up to date with all relevant procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards., • Support a non-float assignment by consistently working at the designated location and contributing to a stable, reliable team presence.Essential Skills, • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required., • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles., • Experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and properly storing specimens according to test requirements., • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information., • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in checking test requisitions or computer labels against orders., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication., • High school diploma or GED., • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols., • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety practices., • Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to handle telephone inquiries., • Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • 2–4 years of overall work experience is preferred., • Previous experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is highly beneficial., • Experience updating patient information and recording maintenance and decontamination data., • Ability to participate in training and mentoring of other staff members on phlebotomy techniques and workflows., • Comfort with handling multiple specimen types and following varied protocols for transport and storage., • Strong organizational skills and the ability to recommend workflow improvements., • Commitment to ongoing learning through annual departmental trainings and updates to procedures and regulations.Work Environment This is a non-float position based at a fixed clinical location in New York. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, involving frequent blood draws and specimen handling in a laboratory or hospital setting. You will regularly use phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various specimen containers and tubes, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The role requires consistent adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and established safety protocols, with routine decontamination procedures and annual departmental trainings to maintain a safe and compliant workplace. Dress is typically professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Clifton Park, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
