You will use straight needles and butterfly needles, manage data entry in internal systems, and support diagnostic testing by collecting, labeling, and preparing specimens in a fast-paced outpatient environment Responsibilities • Welcome patients to the patient service center and ensure a professional, courteous experience from entry through discharge., • Perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures, completing approximately 20–40 blood draws per day and supporting a daily patient volume of 30–50 patients., • Collect blood and other specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper identification and adherence to collection protocols., • Label specimens accurately, apply barcodes where required, and prepare samples for testing by centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens in line with test orders., • Process specimens and perform data entry, recording patient information, test orders, and specimen details into the internal laboratory information system., • Update and maintain patient records in the system at the time of interaction, ensuring information is complete, accurate, and current., • Record routine maintenance data, support decontamination procedures, and follow all safety and infection control guidelines., • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles, following best practices for venipuncture and patient safety., • Collect and store specimens in accordance with established procedures and temperature requirements to maintain sample integrity. Essential Skills • At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience, with 2 or more years preferred., • Proficiency in venipuncture and blood drawing, including experience performing high-volume blood draws., • Hands-on experience using straight needles for blood collection; experience with butterfly needles is also required., • Strong data entry skills and comfort working with computer-based internal systems to enter and update patient information., • Demonstrated ability to process specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples according to test orders., • Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling, patient identification, and recordkeeping., • Minimum education of high school diploma or GED., • Background as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Assistant with phlebotomy responsibilities. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a busy outpatient patient service center or similar high-volume clinical setting., • Medical Assistant experience that includes routine blood collection and specimen processing., • Familiarity with CPT-related processes and terminology used in diagnostic laboratory environments., • Experience working with adult and geriatric populations, including older patients who may require additional care and support., • Bilingual communication skills are beneficial for serving a diverse community., • Ability to operate and maintain centrifuges and related specimen processing equipment., • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple patients, specimens, and data entry tasks efficiently., • Reliability and flexibility to cover nearby locations such as Kew Gardens, Middle Village, or another Richmond Hill site when needed. Work Environment This position is based in a busy patient service center in South Richmond Hill, Queens, which typically sees approximately 110 patients per day. Phlebotomists primarily work at the Richmond Hill location, with occasional coverage at nearby sites in Kew Gardens, Middle Village, or another Richmond Hill center as needed. Two scheduling options are available: Position 1 works Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m; Position 2 works Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Both schedules provide a four-day work week totaling 40 hours, with the opportunity to pick up additional hours. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, involving frequent interaction with a predominantly adult population, extensive use of computer systems for data entry, and routine use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges for specimen processing.
