Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This role focuses on providing high-volume phlebotomy services in a busy outpatient setting, with a strong emphasis on customer service and patient care. You will primarily perform blood draws using straight needles, support a large number of pediatric and geriatric patients, and help reduce patient wait times by working efficiently and accurately. The position requires strict adherence to laboratory protocols, safety regulations, and specimen handling procedures while maintaining a calm, courteous, and professional demeanor with patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities • Perform 20–30 or more blood draws per day, ensuring accurate and efficient venipuncture to help reduce patient wait times., • Provide excellent customer service to patients, including a large volume of pediatric and geriatric patients, by communicating clearly, calmly, and respectfully., • Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal collection) in a clear and courteous manner so patients understand what to expect., • Collect blood and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols, ensuring specimen integrity and patient safety., • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles, adapting to patient age and vein condition as needed., • Review and fully understand physicians’ orders before performing collections to ensure the correct tests and specimens are obtained., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that all patient and test information is correct before labeling., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory guidelines., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the original orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy., • Package specimens properly for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen stability and integrity., • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling and following all procedures specific to each protocol., • Perform routine tasks such as labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontaminating work areas, and updating patient information in the system., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, infection control, and hazardous materials., • Attend annual departmental trainings and updates to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements., • Answer telephone calls professionally, provide information as appropriate, and read laboratory results when needed to satisfy inquiries within established guidelines.Essential Skills, • At least 2+ years of phlebotomy experience in a clinical or laboratory setting., • Proficiency in performing high-volume blood draws, typically 20–30 or more venipunctures per day., • Strong experience using straight needles for venipuncture, with the ability to demonstrate proper technique., • Ability to perform blood draws and specimen collection on pediatric and geriatric patients., • Hands-on experience with labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens according to test requirements., • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes and patient orders., • Knowledge of proper specimen storage conditions, including required temperatures and appropriate collection containers or tubes., • Familiarity with recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures for equipment and work areas., • Ability to update patient information accurately and maintain precise records., • Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP safety and regulatory standards., • Strong customer service skills to interact effectively with patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced environment., • Clear verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to patient and caller inquiries., • Availability to work on Saturdays as required by the schedule.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience working with both pediatric and geriatric populations, providing age-appropriate communication and care., • Comfort handling high patient volumes while maintaining accuracy and composure., • Ability to use butterfly needles when appropriate for patient needs., • Experience answering phones in a clinical or laboratory environment and reading laboratory results to callers within established guidelines., • Willingness to attend ongoing departmental trainings and stay current with procedural and regulatory updates.Work Environment The role is based in a busy clinical or laboratory setting that experiences high patient volumes and periods of increased wait times, requiring efficient and organized workflow. Typical schedules run Monday through Friday, with some locations requiring Saturday shifts. You will work with a diverse patient population, including many pediatric and geriatric patients, and perform a large number of blood draws each day. The environment follows strict OSHA and DEP safety regulations, including infection control and proper handling of biological specimens. Work involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials. Staff generally wear professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare setting, along with any required personal protective equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
