Job Description The Curator of Education oversees and is responsible for developing and evaluating all education programming, both on campus and externally. This person plays an important role in developing biological and conservation messaging. This person oversees all aspects of husbandry and well-being for all program animal populations. This person is responsible for formulation and implementation of the program animal population management plans and acts as the primary liaison between education and the veterinary department. This person manages departmental personnel to include supervision, recruitment, retention, training, development, commendation and disciplinary action. This person is responsible for departmental budget development and monitoring. This person interacts regularly with other Zoo departments and assists them in achieving their goals. This position participates in a mandatory on-call rotation. Primary Job Functions Supervise all aspects of animal husbandry, health, well-being, and Population Management • Establish &/or approve the procedures for species husbandry., • Primary authority in husbandry matters., • Ensure all enrichment, training, and well-being SOP’s are being followed., • Complete daily reviews of animal activity reports., • Maintain knowledge of principles and practices of zookeeping, including diet, housing, and breeding., • Attend Curator meeting to report the events that have occurred in areas of responsibility., • Advise and consult regularly with the Zoo veterinary department., • Create and implement the program animal population management plans., • Advise the registrar and participate as needed in preparing for and conducting animal transports., • Maintain a functional understanding of ZIMs., • Have a thorough understanding of AZA accreditation standards and AZA conservation and science programs., • Communicate with professional colleagues when needed to further the goals of their area of supervision., • Develop, administer, and evaluate educational programs., • Coordinate education services for outreach; publicize education programs and promote participation; coordinate educational services with school districts, youth groups, zoo members, organizations, and the public., • Develop, monitor, and implement programs and activities for zoo members, senior citizens, and general visitors; develops and presents classes and training for teachers and students at local colleges and universities., • In-depth knowledge of AZA, national and regional education standards, such as KDHE., • Develop and produce education program materials; develop and prepare content design, production, use, and evaluation of printed materials; develop curricula, booklets, teaching units, informational sheets, games, flyers, posters, etc., • Plan, organize, and coordinate education special events programs and tours such as Safari Edventure Day, • Provide direction to, train, and mentor Education staff. Assist in resolving job related concerns. Meet weekly with Education staff., • Participate in evaluating applications for open positions and a key role in selecting final candidates for education department positions., • Compose reports and other documents clearly, logically, accurately and professionally., • Develop and monitor annual operating and revenue budgets for the education department., • Interact regularly with animal care staff, zoo maintenance, horticulture, guest services, education, public relations, and development departments, and assist them in achieving their goals., • Inspect facilities for security, safety and facility maintenance. Report areas of concern to the appropriate department(s)., • Initiate and facilitate on-call personnel for emergency events., • Perform various public relations, educational programming, and guest relations activities. Attend and may present at professional meetings., • Participate in volunteer and student activities and occasionally conduct guided tours., • Act as facility Manager on Duty when required., • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college university in Biology, Zoology, Education, Park Resource Management, Environmental Resources, Wildlife Management, or a related field., • Two years of experience in the field of education., • One year of experience as a supervisor. The employee is subject to activities that occur in both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee is subject to any potential hazards of working in a zoo, including zoonotic diseases, animal-related sounds, odors, and allergens. The employee is subject to potential hazards of working with and near dangerous animals. Employee must be able to work a schedule that may involve working weekends, holidays, or after regular work shifts. Employee must participate in a mandatory on-call rotation, including call-backs. Physical requirements This position may require lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, exerting up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The role requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods—sometimes over uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions—and to perform repetitive tasks with limited breaks in both indoor and outdoor zoo environments. The employee must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing information, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving animals and their exhibits using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of exhibits. The employee is required to have visual acuity to accurately determine the health of animals and the security of their exhibits, to record animal behavior, or to make general observations. The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform activities such as operating machinery.
