DESCRIPTION The SubArc Welder performs specialized welding using submerged arc welding (SAW) processes to join, fabricate, and repair steel pressure vessels, tanks, and related components in accordance with ASME Section VIII and AV’s quality and safety standards. This position requires strong technical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to producing high-quality, code-compliant welds in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) operations on pressure vessels, tanks, and structural components according to blueprints, drawings, and ASME code requirements, • Set up and operate welding machines, including calibration of wire feed, voltage, current, and travel speed., • Inspect joints, fit-ups, and root openings prior to welding to ensure compliance with specifications., • Perform pre- and post-weld cleaning, grinding, and preparation as required., • Monitor weld bead characteristics and make adjustments to maintain weld quality and uniformity., • Conduct routine maintenance and checks on welding equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation., • Collaborate with Fitters and Weld Leads to identify and resolve weld-related issues., • Follow and maintain documentation per AV’s ASME Quality Control Manual and company welding procedures (WPS/PQR)., • Adhere to all AV safety policies, including the use of appropriate PPE and participation in safety audits., • Assist with training and mentoring entry-level welders or apprentices as assigned., • Perform additional fabrication or shop duties as directed by the supervisor. Other Skills and Abilities • Proficient in SubArc welding, including single and multi-pass welds on thick-wall pressure vessels., • Familiarity with Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes a plus., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and shop drawings., • Strong understanding of welding metallurgy, filler materials, and heat input control., • Skilled in using welding tools, jigs, positioners, and measuring instruments (tape measures, calipers, etc.)., • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality standards., • Reliable, self-motivated, and committed to working safely and efficiently., • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the company’s social and environmental mission by promoting sustainable practices, fostering an inclusive work environment, and consistently prioritizing health and safety in all aspects of their role. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are essential. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE • High school diploma or equivalent., • Minimum of 2 years of SubArc welding experience in pressure vessel, tank, or heavy steel fabrication preferred., • Experience working with ASME Section VIII, Division 1 weld standards strongly desired., • Must possess or be able to obtain AV’s 3G/4G weld certification and/or ASME qualification. Work Environment The work environment includes exposure to heat, sparks, noise, and welding fumes. Protective clothing, gloves, helmets, and eye protection are required at all times. The noise level is typically moderate to high. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.
