Department: Operations Location: EMERYVILLE, CA Reports To: Roaster SUPERVISOR FLSA Status: NON-EXEMPT, 6504 Job Overview: The primary task for this position is to train in the processes involved to roast coffee to Counter Culture Coffee Flavor standards, profiling, and quality to graduate into a production roaster. The Roasting Apprentice must express a strong interest in coffee, as well as have experience in the specialty coffee industry, be self-motivated, demonstrate a willingness to work hard, and commit to the team. Regarding the work environment: the warehouse has some climate control features but is heavily influenced by the environment; therefore, it can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The candidate must be able to multitask and perform effectively with frequent and varied distractions in a noisy environment. Position requires possession of a valid US driver’s license. Job Description: The main working area is subject to environmental conditions, meaning it can be very hot and very cold, depending on the time of year. A typical day is aimed to be 8-8.5 hours; there are sometimes where overtime is required to finish the work and tasks at hand. The majority of the roasting time will be spent standing in place, or in motion (a lot of repetitive motion). This warehouse roasts on average 4k-6,500 lbs of coffee daily- you as the roaster are expected to be able to move this weight of coffee on a daily basis. Coffee Burlap bags start out at 130lbs typically and go up from there, we do have equipment to help with the job some of which you will eventually be required to be certified to use; forklift, pallet stacker, etc. A need to feel comfortable/confident with large machinery and troubleshooting equipment; Equipment consistently worked on will need regular maintenance, troubleshooting, etc. Comfortable with setting up/taking down/participating in cupping coffee, discussing notes with other coffee professionals and individually. Requirements: • Prior roasting experience is a must, (or comparable experience in profiling, tasting, and working with specialty coffee), • Ability to move 160lbs multiple times throughout the day., • Ability to push up to 1540 lbs with a pallet jack., • Receiving green coffee shipments and storing in logical, appropriate bays of warehouse., • Pulling green coffee and loading roasters., • Roasting coffee to order each day., • Log data for the roasts produced and document organic purges., • Work within the structure of Netsuite., • Understand the quality control regiment as set forth by the Coffee Department., • Perform as an effective and skilled coffee taster., • Manage roasting byproducts (chaff, burlap, GrainPro) to maximize reuse or recycling., • Operate Optical Sorter and contribute to daily sorting of roasted coffee., • Ability to learn and operate a forklift safely to load, unload pallets from trucks and for racking coffee., • Assist in organizing and cleaning of roasting and green coffee workspaces. Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Exposure to significant amounts of dust. • The employee is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
