WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: As a Field Technician I – Bridge Inspections (TxDOT Bridge Inspector in Training), you’ll support bridge inspection operations by assisting Qualified Team Leaders and engineers in evaluating, documenting, and reporting bridge conditions. This is an entry-level role designed to build foundational knowledge of bridge inspection practices, safety standards, and TxDOT requirements while providing hands-on experience and a clear pathway for professional growth within the bridge inspection program. Once selected to join our team, you will: • Assist with routine bridge and structure inspections under the supervision of a Qualified Team Leader, • Learn and apply inspection procedures in accordance with the FHWA Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual and TxDOT Bridge Inspection Manual, • Collect, record, and organize field notes, measurements, and photographs during inspections, • Assist with data entry and documentation in TxDOT bridge management systems, including AssetWise, • Support immediate or emergency inspections of damaged bridges as directed, • Help maintain, transport, and properly store inspection tools, safety gear, and field equipment, • Follow all safety procedures, traffic control requirements, and OSHA standards while working in the field, • Participate in required training and professional development to progress toward TxDOT Bridge Inspection qualifications, • Work collaboratively with inspection teams and engineering staff to support accurate and timely inspections KNOWLEDGE: • Basic understanding of bridge components, materials, and structural terminology, • Awareness of inspection safety practices, PPE requirements, and field hazards, • Familiarity with TxDOT bridge inspection processes preferred, • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions, • Effective communication and teamwork skills, • Ability to work safely in field environments, including at heights, over water, and in varying weather conditions, • Basic computer skills and data entry proficiency, • Zero to five (0–5) years of prior experience in construction, field data collection, inspection support, or a related field preferred, • High school diploma or GED required
