Role Overview The Project Structural Engineer, will take ownership of the structural design and technical delivery for building and infrastructure projects—coordinating calculations, drawings, and specifications, and interfacing with Fairhurst’s civil, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation teams to provide integrated, buildable solutions. You’ll work closely with project managers, senior engineers, and clients from concept through construction, ensuring designs meet UK codes, are sustainable, and provide real value. Key Responsibilities Design & Technical Delivery • Produce and check structural calculations, analysis models, and drawings for steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures in accordance with UK codes and Eurocodes., • Develop concept, scheme, and detailed designs; prepare specifications and schedules; and contribute to design risk assessments (CDM)., • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders (architects, MEP, contractors, and clients) to resolve design issues and ensure buildability., • Apply Fairhurst’s quality procedures and contribute to design checking/verification., • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., BS EN Eurocodes, UK Building Regulations) and client/employer’s requirements., • Plan personal workload, meet programme milestones, and support cost estimates and fee proposals., • Provide technical responses to RFIs, review contractor proposals, and undertake site inspections to verify compliance with design intent during construction. Qualifications & Experience • Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent)., • Experience: proven experience in structural engineering design and delivery within consultancy or design‑and‑build environments., • Professional Progression: Working toward or having achieved CEng (IStructE/ICE) is advantageous., • Software Proficiency: Experience with structural analysis and BIM/drafting tools (e.g., TEDDS/STAAD/ETABS/Robot, Tekla/Tekla Tedds, Revit, AutoCAD/Civil 3D). Fairhurst teams widely use Autodesk platforms., • Strong knowledge of UK codes (Eurocodes), detailing standards, and construction methods., • Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary inputs. You will enjoy reinforcing your technical skills when working on the most complex buildings of a Nuclear Power Plant, cultivating strong working relationships in a multi-cultural environment to deliver outstanding results for our clients. As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, integrity, and reliability of the nuclear power plant structures. You will be responsible for managing and leading an international team in addition to various aspects of the design and structural analysis of reinforced concrete or steel structures. Key Responsibilities: • Manage and lead an international team responsible for critical buildings within the Nuclear Island., • Design and analyse reinforced concrete structures for the Nuclear Buildings of EPR nuclear power plants., • Perform structural calculations and Finite Element modelling using ANSYS APDL or similar advanced software and tools, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards such as Eurocode, ETC-C., • Ensure the structural integrity and resilience of the reinforced concrete structures under various loads, including seismic, dynamic, impact of temporary works related to the construction sequence, and environmental factors., • Collaborate with the detailing team, including drafting team, BIM Coordinator, and other design engineers, as well as the technical direction team, to ensure coordination and integration of design requirements., • Conduct calculations and structural assessments of design changes to determine the impact on the reinforced concrete structures and propose necessary design modifications., • Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications, and construction documentation for the reinforced concrete structures., • Conduct structural assessments and evaluations during construction and provide technical support as needed., • Work closely with construction contractors and site teams to resolve any structural issues or challenges during the construction phase., • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and draftsmen involved in the structural design and detailing process., • Collaborate with the client, construction team, and the principal designer as well as regulatory bodies and authorities to ensure compliance with nuclear safety regulations and requirements. Qualifications With a background of working within the nuclear industry or another highly heavy industry sector, you’ll have an established career in Civil Structural Engineering, ideally with a Master's in Civil Engineering or an equivalent relevant subject. Additionally, you will also have the following: • Proven experience in Structural Civil Work, Civil Design, RC detailing, steel structures with ETT-C or Eurocodes or other relevant codes., • Proven experience working on the design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures for nuclear power plants, specifically with European Pressurised Reactors (EPR)., • Sound knowledge of nuclear safety principles, regulations, and standards governing the design and construction of nuclear power plant structures., • Proficiency in using structural analysis software, such as ANSYS, SAP2000, or similar tools., • Familiarity with structural analysis Finite Element software, such as ANSYS APDL, Robot, or similar tools., • Strong understanding of seismic analysis and design principles for nuclear structures., • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail., • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities., • Prior experience in the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures in a nuclear or high-risk industry is highly preferred., • Knowledge of construction processes, materials, and quality control procedures related to nuclear structures., • Professional licensure or chartership is advantageous., • Experience with on-site design support: working with contractors on-site to deliver the implementation of engineering solutions.
