This is a long-term freelance assignment (minimum 12 months, with multi‑year project duration) on a flagship power infrastructure scheme supporting the ongoing upgrade of Scotland’s electricity transmission network to enable net zero targets. Role overview Position: Senior Quantity Surveyor Location: Approximately 30 miles south‑west of Inverness, between Cannich and Tomich (west of Loch Ness) Work pattern: Hybrid – typically 3 days on site, 1 day in office (Kilsyth or Inverness, depending on home location), 1 day WFH Duration: Initial 12‑month contract, with the project running for around 4 years and annual renewals expected You will be a key member of the commercial team, responsible for managing the full commercial lifecycle on a complex, high‑value civil engineering and energy project. This greenfield scheme involves the construction of a new 400/132 kV substation platform and associated works as part of a wider transmission reinforcement and grid upgrade programme across Scotland, designed to connect increased renewable generation and strengthen the national network. Works include a new circa 9.5 km access road, onsite material borrow pits, peat management and storage, construction compounds, SuDS and environmental mitigation, bridges and structures, extensive cut‑and‑fill earthworks, civils for bases and drainage, cable troughs and surfacing, fencing and security, CCTV and lighting, and a new control building including M&E fit‑out. Key responsibilities include leading the commercial management of designated work packages across civils, infrastructure and substation works, administering the contract (including change/compensation events, early warnings, notices, and contractual correspondence), managing subcontracts from procurement through to final account, including measurement, valuation and payment, preparing and presenting monthly CVRs, cost/value reconciliations, forecasts and cashflow. You will also support the project team with cost advice, risk and opportunity management, and value engineering, ensure robust cost capture on complex operations such as earthworks, access road construction, environmental mitigation and structures, liaise closely with site teams, planners and engineers to ensure accurate reporting against programme and budgets and contribute to overall governance, audit and compliance requirements in line with main contractor and client procedures. The successful candidate will require a proven track record as a Senior Quantity Surveyor (or strong Project QS ready to step up) on major civil engineering, infrastructure or energy projects, a background in NEC or similar forms of contract, with strong understanding of change management and commercial risk, experience across some or all of: earthworks, heavy civils, access roads, structures/bridges, utilities, substations or grid‑related projects and strong analytical, reporting and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to challenge and support operational teams. What’s on offer In return, you be part of a long-term, high‑value project with an initial 12‑month contract and realistic potential to extend for the duration of the 4‑year programme and free accommodation provided for project personnel (mix of new shared housing and lodge‑style accommodation), reducing time and cost pressures of working away from home. The project will operate a hybrid working model: minimum 3 days on site plus a blend of office (Kilsyth or Inverness) and home working, aligned to project needs. If you are an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with major civils or power infrastructure experience and are interested in a long‑term role in the Highlands, please apply with your CV or get in touch for a confidential discussion. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted to discuss rates, logistics and start dates in more detail. #LI-JT1 Legal Information: \nWe act as an employment agency for permanent work and as an employment business for temporary work. \n For roles in the UK, applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK. \n We value diversity and promote equality.
