The pharmacist develops and maintains the skills needed to effectively compound prescriptions, writes and updates formulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and builds strong relationships with prescribers’ offices to support safe and effective use of compounded medications. Responsibilities • Answer patient and caregiver questions about compound ingredients, dosage, storage, administration, potential interactions, and other information related to compounded medications., • Provide patients with clear information about the readiness and status of their compounded prescriptions, mailing policies and procedures, and billing and insurance processes., • Receive and review oral, electronic, and written prescriptions, orders, and refill requests, ensuring all information is complete, accurate, and compliant with applicable regulations., • Prepare and mix pharmaceutical compounds, accurately fill prescriptions for dispensing, and label all containers in accordance with SOPs and regulatory requirements., • Establish and maintain complete and accurate patient profiles and pharmacy records, enter prescriptions correctly, and process insurance billing appropriately., • Assist the pharmacy team in delivering responsive and professional customer service to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers., • Help maintain pharmacy inventory, including labels, medications, compounding ingredients, and other supplies, ensuring adequate stock and proper organization., • Clean and maintain equipment, work areas, and glassware in accordance with SOPs, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and compliant environment., • Maintain proper storage and security conditions for medications, compounding ingredients, and finished compounds to preserve quality and integrity., • Compound a wide range of dosage forms, including injections and infusions, irrigations for internal body cavities, ophthalmic preparations, aqueous preparations for pulmonary inhalation, baths and soaks for live organs and tissues, and implants., • Follow established SOPs consistently, assist in the development and refinement of new formulations and SOPs, and perform accurate mathematical calculations for compounding and dosing., • Communicate effectively with prescribers and other healthcare professionals, ensuring that all relevant information is conveyed to appropriate staff for accurate and safe compounding of medications., • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BS in Pharmacy) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited school of pharmacy, • Active Indiana pharmacist license in good standing, • Completion of required continuing education units (CEUs), including compounding-related coursework as applicable, • Hands-on experience with sterile compounding and aseptic technique in a cleanroom or controlled environment., • Experience as a staff pharmacist in a compounding pharmacy, retail pharmacy, long-term care pharmacy, or pharmacy benefits management environment., • Demonstrated experience in pharmaceutical compounding, including preparation of sterile and non-sterile products., • Proficiency in compounding techniques for injections, infusions, ophthalmic dosage forms, pulmonary inhalation preparations, irrigations, baths and soaks, and implants., • Strong knowledge of pharmacology, formulations, and drug dosage calculations., • Ability to accurately receive, interpret, and verify oral, electronic, and written prescriptions and refill requests., • Competence in mathematical calculations related to compounding, dosing, and formulation development., • Experience working in a sterile or aseptic environment, including adherence to sterile compounding standards and aseptic technique., • Skill in maintaining accurate patient profiles, prescription records, and insurance billing documentation., • Customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers., • Familiarity with pharmacy management practices, including inventory management, prescription refills, and prior authorization processes., • Knowledge of key compounding topics such as infusions, nutritional support, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), veterinary medicine, pain management, and mitochondrial disorders., • Ability to follow and contribute to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and formulation development., • Familiarity with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), nutritional support, veterinary compounding, pain management, and mitochondrial disorder therapies., • Knowledge of pharmacy compounding standards and guidelines, including those associated with professional bodies and regulatory organizations., • Exposure to pharmacy management systems, prescription processing workflows, and insurance prior authorization procedures., • Pharmacy-related certifications, such as those recognized by national boards or associations (for example, NABP-related or other pharmacy certifications)., • Commitment to ongoing professional development and completion of relevant CEUs in compounding and clinical pharmacy topics. The pharmacist works in a professional compounding pharmacy environment that includes both sterile and non-sterile compounding areas. The role involves regular use of specialized compounding equipment, glassware, and pharmaceutical ingredients, as well as adherence to strict SOPs for cleaning, maintenance, and quality control. The environment emphasizes aseptic and sterile techniques, proper storage and security of medications and ingredients, and careful handling of injections, infusions, ophthalmic preparations, inhalation solutions, and other complex dosage forms. The position requires sustained attention to detail, frequent interaction with patients, caregivers, and prescribers, and close collaboration with the pharmacy team to ensure safe, accurate, and timely preparation of compounded medications.
