POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is seeking a Director of Finance to oversee all aspects of CHIRLA’s accounting functions. The Director will be responsible for planning, budgeting, directing ledger accounts, financial statements, and cost control systems. The ideal candidate will manage the financial compliance of both 501 c3 and 501 c4 organizations transactions. This position requires a bachelor’s degree with a CPA accreditation with at least five years of experience in the non-profit sector. The Director of Finance must understand financial programs to obtain information related to grant compliance and reporting. The Director of Finance reports directly to the Managing Director and has a hands-on role in this position. This position is part of management and collaborates closely with the management. team. The Director of Finance is responsible for directing, coordinating, maintaining and controlling an accounting system that accurately reflects the financial position of the organization. This role oversees financial operations, ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and provides strategic financial guidance. The Director of Finance is a key member of the senior management team, contributing to the development and implementation of organizational goals and objectives. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership and Financial Planning: • Assists in developing and implementing effective accounting strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with organizational goals., • Collaborate with senior management to establish financial objectives and ensure compliance with evolving regulations., • Supervise financial control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, and cost allocation.Financial Reporting and Compliance:, • Oversee preparation and submission of internal and external financial reports, ensuring accuracy and timeliness., • Coordinate tax filings, working with external accountants to ensure compliance with federal, state, and payroll tax regulations., • Lead the annual audit process and ensure adherence to GAAP and government regulations.Budgeting and Fund Management:, • Prepare and oversee operational budgets, monitoring funding sources and expenses., • Oversee the finance grants areas and collaborate on grant writing and execution, including assisting in preparation and reviewing quarterly and year-end reports for funding sources., • Conduct financial analyses to support cash flow management, investment strategies, and debt management., • Oversee banking and other financial relationships.Department Oversight and Staff Management:, • Supervise, train and develop the finance and accounting team, providing leadership, training, and performance feedback., • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and training of new team members in collaboration with HR., • Ensure effective communication of accounting policies, procedures, and changes across the organization., • Review and direct monthly closing of the books and perform detail analysis.Program Development and Oversight:, • Coordinate accounting information systems and implement updates to optimize processes., • Ensure compliance with financial regulations for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations., • Collaborate with program and development staff to prepare financial reports for grants and ensure compliance.Relationship Management:, • Serve as a liaison to external auditors, regulators, and financial institutions., • Maintain positive relationships with funders, vendors, and other stakeholders.SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: REQUIRED: • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration., • At least five years’ experience in nonprofit finance with significant grant reporting and cash flow/structural turnaround experience., • At least three years’ supervisory experience., • Must be a self-starter and take initiative in communicating improvements., • In-depth knowledge of financial practices, regulations, and reporting requirements., • Proficiency with accounting systems and related technologies (e.g., Sage Intacct, Nexonia, Salesforce)., • Experience in the supervision, management, and mentoring of staff., • Ability to translate financial concepts effectively and the ability to work with program and development colleagues to accomplish grant reporting and financial goals., • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills., • Ability to prioritize tasks and work in a rapidly changing environment while meeting key deadlines., • Attention to detail and accuracy is a must; great ability to problem solves and find suitable solutions to immediate challenges with consistent treatment., • Must be able to work efficiently and manage multiple projects at once, which may be at different stages of design and execution. FLSA Classification: Exempt/Salary, full-time, regular Classification: CHIRLA recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with AFSCME Local 4501. This position is part of management and is not covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
