Job DescriptionJob Title: Steel Fitter (Welder) Job Description This position focuses on fitting and welding structural steel components in a busy fabrication shop environment. You will read and interpret structural blueprints and weld symbols, perform multiple welding processes, and fabricate frames, platforms, supports, and custom assemblies. The role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety and quality standards, and the ability to work efficiently on a high-volume second-shift schedule. Responsibilities • Fit and weld structural steel components according to shop drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols., • Perform FCAW, GMAW (MIG), and SMAW (stick) welding processes as required for each project., • Lay out, measure, cut, tack, and fit structural members accurately to meet design specifications., • Fabricate frames, platforms, supports, and custom steel assemblies from raw materials., • Operate shop equipment, including saws, grinders, drills, presses, and overhead cranes, in a safe and efficient manner., • Verify dimensions, squareness, and alignment of components prior to welding and after welding is complete., • Perform visual inspection of welds to ensure quality, structural integrity, and compliance with applicable standards., • Follow all shop safety procedures, welding standards, and quality requirements at all times., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper handling and storage of tools and materials., • Collaborate effectively with welders, fitters, supervisors, and inspectors to complete projects on time., • Meet productivity and quality expectations while minimizing rework and scrap., • Apply knowledge of structural tolerances and fabrication best practices to ensure accurate and efficient production., • Use strong blueprint-reading skills to understand project requirements and accurately lay out and mark welding symbols on structural steel., • Work on your feet for extended periods and safely lift materials up to 50 pounds as part of daily tasks.Essential Skills, • At least 3 years of experience as a structural welder/fitter in a fabrication shop environment., • Strong ability to read and interpret structural blueprints, steel prints, and weld symbols., • Hands-on experience fitting and welding carbon steel structural components., • Proficiency with FCAW and/or GMAW (MIG) welding processes., • Ability to accurately measure, lay out, square, and fit structural assemblies., • Knowledge of structural tolerances and fabrication best practices., • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds and remain on your feet for extended periods., • Experience working with structural steel and familiarity with steel manufacturing processes., • Competence in using common fabrication tools such as saws, grinders, drills, and presses., • Capability to work effectively in a high-volume, production-oriented fabrication shop.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • AWS welding certification, with D1.1 Structural Steel strongly preferred., • Experience working with heavy structural members in a fabrication shop., • Familiarity with plasma or oxy-fuel cutting equipment and processes., • Forklift or overhead crane operating experience., • Formal vocational or trade school training in welding, metal fabrication, or a related field., • Strong blueprint-reading expertise that supports precise layout, fitting, and marking of welding symbols., • Comfort working with structural steel in a fast-paced, large-scale project environment., • This role does not involve pipe fitting, pipe welding, or field/site-based installation work.Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in a steel fabrication shop that operates as an open, industrial welding environment. The shop floor sits under a large awning that provides shade but is not climate controlled, so temperatures can become hot, especially during warmer months. The work area is typical of a structural welding shop: dirty, dusty, and loud, with frequent use of heavy equipment and power tools. You will work on the second shift from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., currently averaging 55 to 58 hours per week, with a stated goal of moving toward six-day workweeks as new large projects begin. The shop handles substantial, long-duration projects with 100,000-plus man-hours, offering a steady flow of challenging structural fabrication work. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required and standard for a welding and fabrication environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Peoria, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $32.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
