Job Description Independent Living Skills (ILS) Direct Support Professional provides direct training and encouragement to address the identified skill development needs of an individual who has developmental disabilities in the areas of communication skills, community living and mobility, interpersonal skills, reduction/elimination of maladaptive behavior, self-care, and sensory/motor development involved in acquiring functional skills. Independent living skills include the ability to look after personal needs, physically and emotionally, understand how things work, the relationship between actions and consequences, and good decision making. Categories of independent living skills include personal care, organization, food preparation, clothing care, money management, and more. Hours to be determined due to the number of participants on the caseload. Essential Job Functions ● Assist how to properly wash & fold laundry, dishes, etc. ● Assist participants in becoming more independent in their daily life. ● Assist scheduling & going to medical appointments. ● Assist with maintaining all benefits by staying up to date with paperwork. ● Assist with meal planning/ preparation. ● Assist with teaching clean techniques and cleaning together. ● Documentation of interactions with participants. ● Educate and support individuals in expressing their rights and understanding the related consequences of their decisions. ● Facilitate client growth by recognizing the autonomy of the individual receiving services. ● Help with money management by creating budgets, identifying wants vs needs, properly planning and preparing for big purchases and staying on top of bills. ● Is able to implement a behavioral or health plan after training and competently handle crisis situations as determined by written and verbal interviews ● Other duties as assigned. ● Provide transport to places to handle business. ● Respects the cultural and linguistic values of the participants, their parents, and their Circle of Support ● Stay up to date on affordable housing opportunities and assist clients with applying to these opportunities. ● Teach boundaries of how to respect others and their space. ● Thoroughly complete documentation to assure compliance with all state and federal regulations. Minimum Qualifications The Independent Living Skills Worker shall possess the minimum qualifications of: · Endurance – Moving About: (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) Move from location to location frequently, up to .5 miles or more at a time. Ability to drive or walk for at least one hour; lift at least 50-100(with assistance) pounds; to assist adults in activities of daily living who are non-ambulatory · Specific Examples Include but are not limited to: Travel to the participant’s home to monitor them during their activities of daily living, traveling in the community, assisting with grocery shopping, etc. · Endurance-Overall Strength: Some sedentary work. Bending, lifting, and squatting, with objects weighing up to 40 lbs. Must be able to handle consumers with physical impairment problems. Exerts force and or lifts or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds occasionally. (ex. Groceries or laundry) · Climbing: Periodically – Does not occur every shift, ascend and descend stairs depending on if a participant lives on a second or higher floor without access to an elevator. A possible driveway incline (an uneven surface) used to access required participant homes. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS · Location: Inside/Outside – Work is predominately inside and generally providing protection from weather conditions and temperature changes. Outdoors accompanying consumers to assist with daily chores/activities. · Stairs/Steps: Periodic – Does not occur on every shift. Ascend and descend stairs, steps, or similar uneven surfaces to access any required work area or other areas related to functioning in the workplace. Education · A.A. or B.A. in education, psychology, sociology, or related field, and (preferably) one year experience in training developmentally disabled and/or special needs population; or High School diploma plus three years of experience in teaching/working with developmentally disabled and/or special needs population. Experience ● At least six (6) months of experience working with developmentally disabled who have behavioral or mental health challenges Additional Skills ● Has ability to represent BES ILS program in a professional manner at all times ● Is fluent in oral and written English ● Demonstrates good oral and written communications skills and the ability to work effectively on a multi-disciplinary interagency team & cooperatively with diverse external collaborators (Parents, Regional Center Case Managers, Generic Community Based Programs –IHSS, Section 8) ● Track record of being able to get along with co-workers, Program Supervisor, Program Coordinator, Consumers, Consultants, parents, and Regional Center Staff Certifications, Licensing, Clearances ● Is able to be certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention ● Is able to attend the required weekly, monthly, and annual staff meetings and trainings ● Have TB clearance ● Have current certification in CPR and first aid ● Have valid California driver's license with a clean DMV printout ● Current and active automobile insurance policy ● Able to provide fingerprint clearance Company DescriptionWe, the co-founders, of Be Encouraged Services have a commitment to provide the best possible services to individuals who need it.
