Job Description Position Summary The Bike Mechanic is responsible for ensuring rental bikes are safe, functional, and ready to ride. They serve as mentors for rental technicians, oversee workflow in the shop, step in to resolve technical or service-related issues, and represent our commitment to safety, quality, and community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following: Bike Maintenance and Repair • Inspect, maintain, and repair rental bikes to safety and performance standards., • Preform daily safety inspections before and after bike use., • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues quickly and accurately., • Complete routine and advanced maintenance, including drivetrain adjustments and troubleshooting, hydraulic brake service and bleeding, tubeless tire installation and repair wheel truing and minor repair, suspension setup and basic adjustments, and derailleur hanger alignment and shifting optimization., • Wash bikes and ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and ready for guests., • Identify recurring mechanical issues and proactively address fleet wear patterns., • Assist guests with bike selection based on their needs, abilities, and riding goals., • Rent out and check in bikes and helmets using Point of Sale system., • Provide friendly and professional communication with guests, coworkers, and supervisors., • Actively listen to guest needs and address mechanical concerns clearly and professionally., • Maintain daily records of bike builds, repairs, and service work., • Accurately record customer notes and equipment status., • Maintain inventory of parts, tools, supplies, and notify supervisor of restocking needs., • Oversee the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the Bike Shop., • Perform general housekeeping tasks such as trash removal, sweeping, and cleaning., • Maintain a supply of equipment needed to operate safely and efficiently., • Follow all safety policies and proper tool-use procedures., • Work collaboratively with coworkers on bike builds, repairs, and daily shop operations., • Train or assist in training less-experienced staff on procedures and technical skills., • Step in wherever needed to support operations and uphold Hilltop’s culture of safety, teamwork, and fun., • Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and management., • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent experience., • Must be 18 years or older., • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check., • Previous experience building, repairing, and maintaining a variety of bicycles., • Strong understanding of modern bicycle mechanics and safety standards., • Ability to read and interpret manuals, diagrams, and written or verbal instructions., • Ability to write clear repair notes and maintain organized records., • Basic math skills applicable to measurements and repair tasks., • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to different repair situations., • Ability to work independently, follow a daily schedule, and meet attendance expectations., • Willingness and ability to perform manual labor, including lifting 50+ pounds and standing for extended periods., • Ability to use tools and equipment safely and correctly., • Effective oral and written communication skills., • Good judgment and professionalism when interacting with customers., • Ability to stay calm and respond quickly under pressure., • Availability to work up to 40 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Excellent stamina is required. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold and humidity, and exposure to snow/ice.
