Job Description THE ORGANIZATION The Center for Justice Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community safety and racial justice. Since 1996, we’ve worked alongside communities, courts, and those most directly affected by the justice system to build stronger, healthier, and more equitable neighborhoods. With a team of over 900 staff and an annual budget of $130 million, the Center carries out its mission through three core strategies: • Operating Programs that pilot new ideas and address local challenges;, • Conducting original research to evaluate what works—and what doesn’t; and THE OPPORTUNITY The Center for Justice Innovation is seeking a Senior Social Worker, Jail Diversion to lead a team of social workers and counselors who assess the clinical and services needs of defendants currently being held in pretrial detention. This will include coordinating closely with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court to identify and assess potential participants. The ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges. Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Senior Social Worker, Jail Diversion will lead a team that conducts independent clinical assessments and drafts treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Senior Social Worker will supervise a team of social workers and counselors and oversee the referral, assessment, and treatment planning process—ensuring adherence to a strict timeline and that the process is completed as quickly as possible. They will also regularly conduct assessments and prepare treatment plans, including for more complex and demanding cases. Additionally, in coordination with the Clinical Director, the Senior Social Worker will design and refine workflows for the team, and oversee data entry. The goal is to provide information that will enable defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to resolve cases as quickly as possible, significantly reducing the time people spend in pretrial detention. An essential and dynamic feature of the Senior Social Worker’s role will be close collaboration with key external stakeholders. They will work regularly with New York City’s public defense organizations and other defense attorneys, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, staff at the Department of Correction and Correctional Health Services, the judge and court staff from New York County Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, and an array of community-based alternative to incarceration and community-based providers. Our flagship Ready, Willing & Able (RWA) program provides paid transitional work experience, transitional housing, advanced occupational training, and comprehensive supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness. The Doe Fund is also one of New York City’s largest nonprofit developers of permanent affordable and supportive housing, with more than 1,900 units in operation or pre-development. The Doe Fund has an annual operating budget of $80 million and a full-time staff of nearly 500, a significant portion of whom are graduates of our programs. We are seeking a Mental Health Counselor for the Villa residence which is The Doe Fund's newest permanent supportive housing program for homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS. The program is designed to provide long-term residential care and twenty-four-hour support services in a community environment that maximizes residents' independence while ensuring their physical and emotional security and well-being. Forty-one units will be allocated for residents referred by the New York City HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) and twenty-seven apartments will be for adults referred by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing supportive case management services to the HASA-funded residents. The successful candidate will have strong clinical and communication skills along with an understanding of working with the HIV/AIDS population. Key Responsibilities: • Maintain a caseload and provide regular case management services to these individuals, • Maintain resident records in compliance with agency and funding standards, • Conduct and review assessments, • Develop and implement individual Service Plans and assist residents with achieving their goals geared toward self-sufficiency, • Monitor and ensure residents are linked to healthcare providers, • Provide counseling and crisis intervention as necessary, • Assist residents in securing and maintaining benefits, • Maintain a liaison with community services including hospitals, substance abuse treatment programs, HRA, and mental health programs, • Facilitate groups and activities that promote health and independent living skills development, • Monitor and assist residents with rent payments and budgeting, • Conduct regular unit inspections, • Educate residents about approaches to mental health, • Compile resources on mental health information and treatment strategies, • Attend ongoing training to enhance the services provided to the residents, • Assist with completion of HASA’s weekly and monthly reports as well as any other relevant reports, • Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field required, • License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) is preferred, • The ideal candidate must have at least one year of experience working with people who are homeless, living with HIV/AIDS, have substance abuse histories, or suffer from mental illness, • At least 5 years of experience in the mental health field, • Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification is a plus, • Knowledge of benefits in the New York City Metro area, HIV/AIDS, psychiatric diagnoses, substance abuse, and mental health issues, • Solid computer skills – internet, Microsoft Office, and charting database, • Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills Submit your application for review.
