Job Description & Requirements • Specialty: Labor and Delivery, • Discipline: RN, • Start Date: 01/12/2026, • Duration: Ongoing, • 37.5 hours per week, • Shift: 12 hours, days, • Employment Type: Staff Job Description: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) Position Title: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) Department: Labor & Delivery / Women’s Services Reports To: Nurse Manager / Charge Nurse FLSA Status: Non-Exempt / Exempt (based on employer) Position Summary The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to patients throughout the childbirth experience, including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care within the scope of the unit. The L&D RN works collaboratively with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and support staff to ensure safe, high-quality maternal and neonatal outcomes. Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care • Provide direct, continuous RN assessment and monitoring of laboring patients, including fetal heart rate monitoring, maternal vital signs, labor progression, and overall well-being., • Assist with and support all types of deliveries: vaginal, cesarean, high-risk, and emergency situations., • Administer medications including induction agents, epidurals, oxytocin, antibiotics, and pain management interventions per provider orders and protocols., • Provide immediate postpartum care and education to birthing parents and newborns., • Support patients with breastfeeding initiation and assist with newborn bonding and care., • Recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, and fetal distress.Clinical Duties, • Document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR)., • Maintain proficiency in fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, and emergency response., • Prepare and assist with surgical procedures including cesarean sections, VBAC monitoring, and operative deliveries., • Ensure all equipment (e.g., fetal monitors, IV pumps, neonatal warmers) is functioning properly.Collaboration & Communication, • Work closely with physicians, midwives, anesthesia providers, and support staff to coordinate care., • Educate patients and families on labor processes, postpartum care, newborn safety, and discharge instructions., • Advocate for patient preferences while upholding safety standards.Compliance & Safety, • Adhere to hospital policies, state/federal regulations, and evidence-based perinatal guidelines., • Maintain a clean and safe environment, follow infection-prevention standards, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.QualificationsEducation & Experience, • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice., • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)., • Minimum 1 year of clinical nursing experience; previous L&D, postpartum, or women’s health experience preferred.Certifications, • Basic Life Support (BLS) required., • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred or required depending on facility., • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required., • Fetal Monitoring Certification (C-EFM or equivalent) preferred.Skills & Competencies, • Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills., • Proficiency in fetal monitoring interpretation., • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress, fast-paced situations., • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient-education abilities., • Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care.
