Job Summary The Exhibit Technician is a core member of the team dedicated to ensuring every visitor to the Children’s Museum Houston (CMH) and the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center (FBCDC) has an exceptional experience. Part engineer and part artist, this role is responsible for fabricating, assembling, maintaining, troubleshooting, and installing exhibit components, ensuring all elements are safe, functional, and engaging. Working collaboratively with other exhibit staff, the Exhibit Technician helps create and sustain one-of-a-kind, hands-on experiences that reflect the museum’s creativity and innovation. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, detail-oriented, creative problem solver, passionate about delivering a whimsical, safe, and memorable experience for families while contributing to a productive and collaborative work environment. Job Duties and Responsibilities Maintenance & Installations/Strikes • Performs morning maintenance, checking against the Maintenance Lists; at both locations as needed., • Troubleshoots complex and chronic issues, communicating next steps and status as needed., • Participates in exhibit / seasonal decor change-outs, following the direction of exhibits leadership staff., • Communicates needed replacement parts / materials to exhibits leadership staff., • Comfortable working with shop drawings, wiring diagrams, and loose concept drawings with the oversight of the Shop Supervisor or and other exhibits leadership staff., • Confident handling and safely operating standard woodworking/metal fabrication tools and equipment., • Self-reliant, working on projects in a shared work shop space., • Efficient and organized approach to work zones and project management. Project Management • Daily review of the project board and project status to keep an eye on production timelines and deadlines, including proactively communicating with the Shop Supervisor when projects are behind schedule., • Participates in team planning and logistical meetings. Skills and Qualifications • Highly organized individual with technical knowledge of fabrication - woodworking and metalwork. Electronics and digital fabrication experiences a plus., • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, • Proficiency with SketchUp Pro, • 4+ years of experience in exhibit fabrication and maintenance, or equivalent experience., • 2+ years of experience with electromechanical setups (create from scratch and maintenance)., • 2+ years of experience safely operating scissor lifts, forklifts, telehandlers, and box trucks with a lift-gate Requirements Physical Demands • Able to stand, bend, crouch, and work on your feet for extended periods, • Comfortable working with hands and following visual direction, • Fabrication shop for the majority of work time, • Some weekend work is required (rotating weekend shift schedule), • Some weeks require work over 40 hours, • Valid driver's license, • Reliable method of transportation to and from work, • Professional attire appropriate for a workshop setting and also in the exhibit spaces around visitors from the public.
