Job Description Position Title: Produce Manager Back-Up Department: Produce Department Position Reports To: Store Manager, Asst. Store Manager & Produce Department Manager. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Profile last updated: January 2013 Position Summary: Assist Department Manager in implementing all company and division policies to achieve maximum sales and profits in the produce departments. Essential Job Functions: Develop maximum customer relations by produce department personnel through personal example of friendliness and courtesy, and implementation of all company polices. Be alert and assist in store security. Be perceptive and handle customer complaints. Assist Department Manager in making recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, disciplining, demoting, transferring and evaluating all produce department personnel. Proper indoctrination of all department employees. Be sure they can read scales and prices correctly. Give adequate knowledge and training of price marking, insuring the proper emphasis on customer courtesy and productivity is developed and that skills learned are properly utilized. Supervise all aspects of salad bar operations. Maintain personable, clean and neat appearance of departmental people, having them properly uniformed and identified. Maintain good communication with all store personnel. Plan, organize, direct, and control the activities of the produce department in the absence of the Produce Manager. Direct the receiving, storing, pricing, and merchandising of all produce products. Assure adequate stock and supplies by proper ordering, so that department inventories can be maintained at optimum levels. (a) Effectively inventory to against waste and pilferage. (b) Give special attention to stock rotation. Maintain and submit required records and reports and use them effectively. Maintain effective and good house cleaning in all areas (a) Clean and/or defrost cases according to schedule. (b) Clean floors. (c) Keep a clean, orderly cooler and preparation area. (d) Maintain proper disposal of waste and material. Keep adequate supplies on hand: bags, pricing and making equipment, etc. Analyze continuously all aspects of produce department (space allocation, design, display, price marking, rotation, inventories, personnel, etc.) and periodically make changes, or make recommendations to store manager. Demonstrate the ability and desire to promote, communicate and implement company initiatives and process improvements to direct reports in a positive manager. Demonstrated aptitude to manage people and organize workloads. Be prompt, tactful, calm, courteous, and professional in all interactions. Perform all duties as assigned by the store manager and/or supervisor. Minimum Position Qualifications: Willing to be flexible and work mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights as the work demands. Willing and available to work weekends and holidays as needed. Understanding of all key components of department operations (i.e. Managing people, merchandising, computer assisted ordering, inventory management, shrink control, customer services, labor scheduling, expense control, etc.) Position requires working knowledge of produce and preparation. Also, a general knowledge of store operations is desirable. Position requires a person who is adept at communication with employees, customers, and supervision, and is constantly mentally alert, because of constantly changing priorities and demands, must be able to react quickly and be in good physical condition. Effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to make intelligent decisions quickly. Able to tactfully and calmly handle stressful situations and make a positive impression on associates and customers. Possess abilities and skills for effective production, merchandising and customer services related to sale of merchandise. Desired Previous Job Experience: Produce work experience or similar experience in food preparation. Past work record reflects dependability and integrity. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to employment practices, OSHA compliance, food handling, etc. Physical Demands: Standing & Walking – Frequent standing & walking. Estimated total time 7.5 hrs. Maximum continuous time up to 4 hrs. Sitting – Rarely required. Estimated total time 30 mins. Maximum continuous time 30 mins. Lifting & Carrying – Max weight 50 lbs., average weight 20 lbs., distance carried 2 – 10 ft. Must frequently lift items under 10 lbs. and items between 11-50 lbs., and rarely lift 51- 100 lbs. Pushing and Pulling – Occasionally pushing or pulling carts, tray racks, and flat beds loaded with products up to 100 ft. Climbing – Occasionally climb step ladder or step stool ranging from 1.5 feet to 6 feet tall. Occasionally reaching boxes/cases stored on shelves above reach. Other – This position also requires frequent bending, squatting, and kneeling, as well as constant use of either arm or both for reaching in all directions. Frequently stocking lowest display shelves at 18” above floor. Other requirements include twisting, neck flexion/extension, cervical rotation, high grip strength, and frequent forearm movement. Work Conditions – Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, sudden changes in temperature, hammering or impact tools & sharp edges. Exposure to outside 2% and inside 98%.
