HMRC Communications delivers professional, high impact communications and campaigns across the organisation and is part of the Government Communication Service (GCS). Brand and Creative sits within HMRC Communications and provides specialist design, motion and creative support for priority campaigns and business objectives. This role sits at the intersection of design, technology and production leadership. Job description We're looking for a Senior Graphic Designer with a strong technology and systems leadership focus, who can lead how creative work is produced, not just what it looks like. You will be an experienced, production-focused designer with a forward-thinking mindset and demonstrable experience of using AI and automation within professional creative workflows. You will help shape, implement and scale modern creative systems that enable designers and non-designers alike to deliver high-quality, on-brand, accessible content efficiently and safely. Alongside leading on priority campaign design and motion work, you will act as a technical authority and role model, influencing ways of working, embedding standards, and raising creative capability across HMRC and the wider creator community. You will work at pace in a complex environment, balancing innovation with governance, and creativity with consistency, always keeping customer needs, accessibility and HMRC values at the heart of your decisions. Person specification Design and production leadership • Act as lead designer on priority HMRC and cross-government campaigns, delivering work across digital, motion, social and print., • Translate complex policy or service information into clear, engaging, customer-focused creative work., • Deliver and quality assure high quality creative outputs using traditional production tools and formats, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel (for charts and data led visuals), alongside Adobe Creative Cloud., • Produce and oversee print-ready artwork and documents, ensuring accuracy, sustainability considerations and accessibility standards are met at all times., • Apply strong accessibility by default practice across all outputs, ensuring content is inclusive, usable and compliant regardless of format or platform., • Creative technology, AI and workflows., • Lead the development and adoption of AI-enabled creative workflows, automation and templates that improve quality, speed and consistency of delivery across campaigns., • Own and continuously improve the creative production toolchain, ensuring outputs meet HMRC brand, accuracy, accessibility and data handling standards., • Support with clear governance for AI and system use (including review, quality control and risk management), aligned to Civil Service values., • Manage multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously, using project systems to plan, track and deliver to deadlines., • Work confidently with senior stakeholders, campaign teams and project managers, presenting work, influencing decisions and providing expert advice., • Lead by example, modelling strong production discipline, modern design practice and effective use of AI., • Mentor and support designers; line management of up to 2-3 colleagues where required., • Expert use of Adobe Creative Cloud (including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects); working knowledge of HTML for digital design., • For motion graphics specialists: experience using tools such as After Effects, Cinema 4D, Premiere Pro, Audition or Character Animator. • Significant experience working as a senior-level graphic designer delivering high-quality creative across digital, motion and print., • Strong experience of using AI and automation within creative workflows, with a clear understanding of quality control, governance and risk., • Proven ability to design and deliver production-ready systems (templates, toolkits, workflows) that scale across teams., • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence, coach and lead by example., • Strong understanding of accessibility, inclusive design and brand standards., • Making Effective Decisions, • Pension - We make contributions to our colleagues' Alpha pension equal to at least 28.97% of their salary., • Family friendly policies., • Personal support., • A Portfolio of your work (maximum of five projects)to be attached to your application.
