Exchange Engineer Job Description This role focuses on engineering and supporting global email services, with a primary emphasis on Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, Exchange Hybrid, and on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server. You will act as a global subject matter expert within a collaboration engineering function, ensuring the stability, performance, and continual improvement of enterprise email platforms. The position involves close collaboration with technical teams, vendors, and stakeholders across the business to deliver secure, resilient, and efficient email solutions. ResponsibilitiesAct as a global subject matter expert for enterprise email technologies, including Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, Exchange Hybrid (MRS and Edge servers), Microsoft Exchange Server SE (on-premises), Outlook clients (M365 Apps for Enterprise and New Outlook), Outlook on the web (OWA), and Outlook mobile apps for iOS and Android.Ensure the Exchange email service operates at optimal performance by working collaboratively with global teams, vendors, and partners to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.Lead and support incident management escalations and crisis calls related to Exchange technical issues that impact the global email service, providing clear direction and timely resolution.Support and deliver large-scale email projects and initiatives focused on IT optimisation, cost reduction, enhanced user productivity, improved security, business growth, and regulatory compliance.Design and document robust email solutions that meet requirements from diverse stakeholders, including business functions, senior executives, legal and compliance teams, and cybersecurity.Engineer and maintain Exchange on-premise and hybrid environments, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, security management, and effective patching across large deployments.Contribute to mailbox migration programmes from on-premise and hybrid environments to Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, ensuring minimal disruption and adherence to best practices.Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate operational tasks, improve efficiency, and enhance consistency across Exchange environments.Collaborate with teams responsible for Active Directory, Azure infrastructure, networking, and perimeter security to ensure seamless integration and secure operation of email services.Apply DevOps and Agile practices and tooling in the design, delivery, and support of email services, contributing to continuous improvement and automation.Use AI-based tools such as GitHub Copilot and M365 Copilot, where appropriate, to accelerate problem resolution and solution delivery.Produce clear technical documentation, reports, and presentations, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.Engage with colleagues across multiple regions and cultures, fostering effective collaboration and alignment on global email strategies and solutions.Participate in and contribute to significant and complex business programmes, helping to overcome challenges and ensure objectives are consistently met or exceeded.Essential SkillsExtensive experience supporting and engineering Microsoft Exchange Email on-premises and Exchange Hybrid environments within large organisations.Proven experience migrating large numbers of mailboxes to Microsoft 365 Exchange Online in complex enterprise environments.Solid working and engineering knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server SE, including automation, advanced troubleshooting, high availability and disaster recovery design, security management, and patching for large-scale deployments.Strong understanding of Outlook clients, including M365 Apps for Enterprise, New Outlook, Outlook on the web (OWA), and Outlook mobile applications for iOS and Android.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to handle complex, global-level technical issues and requirements.Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders, negotiate effectively, and deliver compelling presentations.Proven track record of contributing to significant and complex business programmes, consistently meeting or exceeding objectives.experience working in large multinational companies and collaborating effectively across different regions and time zones.Respectful and effective when working with colleagues from a wide range of cultures.Additional Skills & QualificationsWorking knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, including use of Active Directory PowerShell modules for administration and automation.Familiarity with Microsoft Azure IaaS components such as virtual machine build patterns (e.g. Pet/Cattle), and ExpressRoute connectivity.experience with Exchange integration in multi-forest designs at large scale.Understanding of Exchange mailbox integration via APIs such as EWS and related technologies.experience developing PowerShell scripts to automate Exchange-related tasks and improve operational efficiency.Knowledge of network topologies and protocols, particularly Domain Name System (DNS), load balancing, routing, and Network Address Translation (NAT).Familiarity with perimeter security devices and methodologies, including firewalls, email gateways, proxy servers, and anti-virus solutions.Exposure to DevOps and Agile operating processes and tooling, and the ability to work within these frameworks.experience adopting AI-based tools such as GitHub Copilot and M365 Copilot to assist with problem resolution and solution delivery.Location Sheffield, UKTrading as TEKsystems.
