Commissioning Technician Manchester, UK Contract or Full time Permanent hire Customer Note: Site-based commissioning activities. 10 hours/day with 6 days/week and 11 days/fortnight rotations for onshore stations. 12 hours/day, 14 days rotation for offshore stations. Key Responsibilities The High Voltage Substation Commissioning Technician supports the safe execution of commissioning activities on HV substations by carrying out hands-on testing, inspections, and verification of primary and secondary plant under the direction of a Commissioning Engineer . Commissioning Support & Execution Assist with the execution of commissioning and pre-commissioning activities on HV substations typically ranging from 33 kV to 400 kV. Carry out commissioning tasks in accordance with: Approved Commissioning Strategies Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) Method Statements and Risk Assessments Follow instructions from the Lead Commissioning Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, or SAP as applicable. Primary Plant Testing & Verification Support commissioning and testing of HV equipment including: AIS / GIS switchgear Circuit breakers, disconnectors, and earthing switches Power and auxiliary transformers Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) Carry out visual inspections, mechanical checks, functional checks, and continuity testing. Assist with primary injection tests and HV functional testing as directed. Secondary Systems & Protection Support Assist with commissioning of control and protection systems, including: Wiring continuity and point-to-point checks Trip, close, interlocking, alarms, and indications Support secondary injection testing under supervision using approved test equipment. Assist with SCADA and control system verification, including indications and remote status checks. Test Equipment & Site Activities Set up, connect, and safely operate commissioning test equipment under instruction. Carry out safe isolation, earthing, and reinstatement of test circuits as directed. Maintain test equipment, leads, and tools in a safe and serviceable condition. Safety, Compliance & Site Discipline Work strictly in accordance with Client Safety Rules, permits, and site authorisations. Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and site inductions. Maintain a clean, safe working environment and immediately report unsafe conditions. Never undertake unsupervised work beyond personal authorisation level. Documentation & Reporting Accurately record test results, observations, and measurements on approved test sheets. Report defects, discrepancies, or installation issues to the Commissioning Engineer. Assist with completion of commissioning records and handover documentation. Authority & Accountability Accountable for the safe and accurate execution of assigned commissioning tasks. No authority to energise plant or alter commissioning scope without instruction. Responsible for following procedures and escalating concerns immediately. Authorisations CAT-1 for non-energised SSEN stations NGP for non-energised NG stations CCNSG or equivalent JBRP1_UKTJ
