Job DescriptionSalary: $120,000-$140,000 Corporate Controller Job Overview Spartan Earthworks and Red Cedar Construction Services are seeking an experienced Corporate Controller to join our finance and accounting leadership team. This role will oversee, coordinate, and supervise accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and administrative finance functions across a fast-paced construction and land development environment. The Corporate Controller will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership to maintain accurate financial records, manage month-end and year-end closing processes, support forecasting and budgeting, and help establish scalable financial policies, procedures, and reporting systems. This position plays a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and compliance as the companies continue to grow. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting knowledge, a solid understanding of GAAP, proven leadership experience, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a project-based construction environment. Experience in construction, land development, sitework, homebuilding, or general contracting is highly preferred. This role requires comfort working with executive leadership, accounting staff, operations teams, project managers, vendors, and external partners. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: • Direct and supervise accounting staff to ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company policies and procedures., • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of financial statements and supporting schedules., • Prepare and/or oversee monthly financial reports, including budget-to-actual analysis, project cost reporting, cash flow reporting, and management review packages., • Work closely with the CFO and executive leadership to update business plans, budgets, forecasts, and financial models., • Establish, implement, and improve financial processes, policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting systems., • Support accounting operations for construction, land development, and related project-based business activities., • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, vendor payments, and bill pay processes., • Manage and review job cost accounting, project cost tracking, work-in-progress reporting, pay applications, draws, and revenue recognition processes, as applicable., • Facilitate workflow between shared services, accounting, operations, project management, and executive leadership., • Coordinate internal and external audit requests and support tax, banking, insurance, and compliance-related reporting., • Oversee treasury management, bank reconciliations, debt reporting, and cash management processes., • Support financial strategy, including risk management, cost controls, margin analysis, process improvements, and operational efficiency initiatives., • Provide high-level financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations to leadership., • Ensure compliance with applicable statutory, tax, and financial regulations., • Partner with leadership to improve reporting visibility, strengthen controls, and support data-driven decision-making., • Manage, mentor, train, and develop accounting and finance team members., • Delegate work based on employee abilities, skills, workload, and business priorities., • Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching, feedback, and development opportunities., • Identify opportunities for team growth, training, and process improvement., • Perform other duties as assigned. Required Skills & Qualifications: • Strong knowledge of accounting, finance, financial reporting, and internal controls., • Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles., • Experience managing accounting functions within a project-based business environment., • Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, work-in-progress reporting, and construction-related financial processes preferred., • Proven ability to lead, train, mentor, and motivate a team., • Demonstrated managerial and leadership experience with a successful record of setting and achieving goals., • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills., • Ability to work efficiently, maintain accuracy, and remain composed in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment., • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to timely, accurate financial reporting., • Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership., • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel., • Experience with construction accounting, ERP, project management, or job costing systems preferred., • Experience with Smartsheet, BuildPro, Brixx, QuickBooks Enterprise, or similar systems preferred., • Experience with mergers, acquisitions, integrations, or multi-entity accounting preferred. Education & Experience: • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required., • Active CPA license preferred., • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience required., • Minimum of 5 years of direct management experience required., • Construction, land development, sitework, homebuilding, or general contracting experience strongly preferred., • Public accounting experience highly preferred., • Multi-entity accounting experience preferred. Schedule: • Monday-Friday, standard daytime hours; 8 am - 5 pm EST, • Occasional weekend work may be required.
