A little about us The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (RSIC) is a federally recognized tribal government dedicated to the economic and social advancement of its people. Established in the early 1900s and formally recognized under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the RSIC represents over 1,100 members of the Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe Tribes—Three Tribes, One Nation. Our lands include the original 28-acre Colony in central west Reno and a 1,920-acre community in Hungry Valley, located 19 miles north of the Colony in the scenic Eagle Canyon region of Nevada. What does a Diabetes Health Educator/Program Manager do? As the Full Time Diabetes Health Educator/Program Manager at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, you will play a pivotal role in supervising a dedicated team, including a Diabetes Program Assistant, Nutritionist, Exercise Therapist, and Exercise Assistant. Your responsibilities will encompass developing and collaborating on program initiatives with the Diabetes Team Clinic Staff, ensuring tailored patient care and maintenance programs are in place. You will provide essential health education aimed at preventing and managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes for a diverse range of patients, including adults, adolescents, children, seniors, and those homebound or at-risk. Your expertise will guide the selection of effective instructional methods and ensure meticulous documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes, fulfilling reporting requirements for the Indian Health Service. Additionally, you will facilitate communication among patients and healthcare providers, manage referrals, and contribute to impactful education programs that address medication, exercise, and nutrition for diabetes management. What we're looking for in a Diabetes Health Educator/Program Manager To thrive as the Full Time Diabetes Health Educator/Program Manager at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, a strong foundation in health education is essential. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Education, coupled with at least one year of experience in health promotion. A deep understanding of health concepts, particularly in diabetes education, is crucial. Effective communication skills are necessary to successfully engage with diverse populations, especially within the Indian community. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a minority environment. Additionally, obtaining and maintaining Certified Diabetes Educator certification within 90 days, alongside a valid driver's license and CPR certification within the first three months of hire, are vital to ensure competency in this role. Preference will be given to qualified candidates of Indian descent, aligning with our commitment to community-focused service. Knowledge and skills required for the position are: • Bachelor’s Degree in Health education and/or Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Education with one year in Health Promotion., • Knowledge of health concepts with an emphasis in diabetes education., • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with Indian people. Must be able to work in a diverse minority environment., • Obtain and maintain Certified Diabetes Educator certification within 90 days., • Must have a valid driver’s license., • Obtain and maintain CPR Certification within first three months of hire.
