Job Description ABOUT THE ROLE The Director of Facilities will join Seattle Art Museum during an exciting time of new leadership as we deepen our commitment to facilities care and maintenance, investing in preventative and proactive programs. This role will drive change and implement systems in support of strategic plan goals to modernize our systems, spaces, and strategies, investing in tools, talent, and technology to drive sustainability and long-term planning and care. In this role, you will be responsible for physical plant maintenance, daily facility operations, engineering, landscaping, office services, and environmental services across all sites. The Director of Facilities oversees the Facilities, Engineering, and Facilities Operations teams, providing leadership and mentoring to five direct reports: Chief Engineer, Facilities Operations Manager, Facilities Project Manager, Facilities Coordinator, and Senior Manager OSP Landscape and Facilities. The Director of Facilities also serves as the head of the cross-functional Safety Committee charged with maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. The ideal candidate has solid management and communication skills paired with strong technical proficiencies. They should bring an understanding of budgeting, capital project management, the ability to prioritize needs across multiple sites, vendor management, contract negotiation, risk management, familiarity with CMMS software, safety and emergency planning, compliance, and energy management and sustainability practices. FSLA STATUS: Full Time, Exempt REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer COMPENSATION: $171,500 - $214,400 WORK SCHEDULE This role is typically scheduled to work Monday – Friday at SAM’s downtown location, with occasional days spent at the Seattle Asian Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park locations. This role will work onsite 5 days/week, with occasional flexibility for hybrid work where needed. Occasional evenings and weekend work pending institutional needs and activities may be required. Following 1 year of service and 1,000 hours worked, SAM makes a discretionary 3% employer contribution regardless of participation and provides an employer match program. Historically, this contribution has been made annually. Responsibilities • Oversee strategic and operational planning for facility services, ensuring long-term viability and operation of all facilities, • Devise annual operating and capital project budgets, track performance, and reforecasting, • Direct and oversee capital projects and ensure their completion according to plans, specifications, schedules, budgets, and contract terms, • Ensure appropriate monitoring and preventative maintenance of all equipment, adhering to building compliance and requirements for all sites including fire protection/suppression systems, building automation systems, chillers, etc., • Ensure facilities at all sites are clean, operable, and comfortable for staff and visitors, • Develop, foster, and oversee positive vendor relationships for ongoing and ad hoc contracted services, • Coordinate with state, local, and federal agencies governing the operation, licensing, and permitting of all sites, ensure compliance with State and local building codes, • Develop service and operations standards with a focus on consistent superior performance and financial accountability, • Facilitate and oversee vendor and contractor RFP and selection process, • Ensure compliance with all requisite regulations concerning employee and public health and safety, including appropriate hazardous materials safety measures, and staff training programs, • Keep emergency response protocols and relevant documentation current, staff is appropriately trained, and required communications systems are in place, • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders towards the successful completion of projects and delivery of day-to-day needs, • Determine priorities for maintenance and service activities and perform site inspections, • Implement and monitor policies and proceduresAbout You, • BA/BS or equivalent combination of education and experience, • Eight years of facility management and operations management experience, including five years in leadership and people management capacities, • Extensive professional experience in the oversight of the facilities, maintenance, and engineering functions in a large institution (museum, educational or cultural institution, hospital, hospitality, nonprofit, or customer service focused organization), • Strong project management skills related to complex facilities operations, engineering and construction projects, • Excellent planning, financial management, and organizational skills, • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with executives, management, employees, and the public, • Strong track record in exercising sound, timely judgment, • Strong management and supervisory skills; ability to motivate teams and simultaneously manage several projects, • Successfully assess priorities and work well with deadlines, exceptional time management, problem solving, and analytical skills, • Exercise discretion in maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information, • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Asana, Slack and internet-based research, • Ability to pass and maintain security background check clearancePreferred Qualifications, • Facilities Management Professional (FMP) or Certified Facility Manager (CFM), • Ten years’ experience as a senior facilities director or manager, • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems and building automation systems The Seattle Art Museum will consider reasonable accommodations for all employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions/duties of this position.
