Job DescriptionBenefits: • Health insurance, • Paid time off Position Overview Ripple Effect Consulting is seeking a SUE Field Crew Chief to support our Survey & Geomatics team across Virginia. Please note: this role does not offer visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. This position is responsible for leading field efforts related to Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), including utility designation, locating, and mapping. The SUE Field Crew Chief will oversee field operations, ensure accurate detection of underground infrastructure, and support a variety of projects tied to construction, maintenance, and utility coordination. This role combines technical execution with team leadership in a fast-paced, field-driven environment. Key Responsibilities • Perform utility locating and designation activities as a SUE Technician and crew leader, • Utilize electromagnetic locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and related tools to identify underground utilities, • Interpret field data to determine utility type, alignment, and depth, ensuring accurate marking and documentation, • Maintain and calibrate locating equipment to ensure consistent performance and reliability, • Keep detailed records of findings, field activity, and equipment usage, • Coordinate with project teams, contractors, and utility providers to communicate results and updates, • Lead, train, and mentor junior SUE technicians on equipment usage, safety standards, and best practices, • Assign daily tasks, manage crew schedules, and monitor quality of work in the field, • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and company quality standards, • Track project timelines and assist in maintaining budget expectations, • Develop and maintain training materials and documentation for field staffQualifications & Skills, • Hands-on experience with electromagnetic locating tools and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems, • Demonstrated ability to lead field crews, manage workloads, and maintain project documentation, • Strong understanding of utility locating practices and data interpretation, • Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders, • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in the field, • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, email, and data transfer tools used in surveyingPhysical Requirements, • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and walking on uneven terrain, • Capability to safely operate field tools such as shovels, tape measures, hammers, and machetes, • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, • Sufficient vision capabilities, including depth perception and focus adjustment, for accurate fieldworkWork Environment, • Primarily field-based work, often in active construction zones or remote locations, • Exposure to environmental elements such as heat, cold, rain, and wind, • Physically demanding role requiring stamina and attention to safetyBenefits, • Freedom to Work program: Set your own schedule and location (as appropriate)., • Principal program: Earn the opportunity to become an owner of the firm., • Flexible paid time off/vacation: Take time off when it makes sense for you and your team., • Career development: Explore a wide range of learning and growth opportunities within and across industries., • Health, life, vision, and dental insurance: Cover all your medical bases., • Paid sick time, retirement plan, fitness reimbursement, pet insurance, identity protection, technology stipend, employee assistance program, and more!
