Job Description Job Title: Foreman – Cable Technician Job Description This contract to hire role offers the opportunity to work on a large-scale data center project, installing and organizing cabling infrastructure in a highly technical construction environment. You will support the build-out of cable systems by spotting for technicians on eco lifts, running and pulling cables between colocation areas, dressing and organizing cables along trays, managing cable pathways, and accurately labeling cables. The position is ideal for individuals with construction or mechanical aptitude who are comfortable working at heights, can follow blueprints, and are eager to develop their skills in cabling and data center environments. Responsibilities • Spot for other technicians working on eco lifts, ensuring safe and efficient operations while they perform work at heights of approximately 10–12 feet., • Run and pull cables between colocation areas, maintaining proper tension, routing, and organization throughout the installation process., • Dress, bundle, and organize cables along cable trays and within racks to maintain a clean, professional, and serviceable installation., • Manage cable systems by routing cables through trays, pathways, and racks according to construction drawings and project specifications., • Label cables accurately and consistently to support clear identification and future maintenance or troubleshooting., • Work at ground level and from eco lifts as needed to complete cabling tasks in both open and elevated areas., • Assemble trays, racks, and related infrastructure by following construction blueprints and layout drawings., • Interpret construction prints and project documents to plan cable routes, tray layouts, and equipment placement., • Operate effectively within an active construction site, remaining alert to moving equipment, changing conditions, and potential hazards., • Follow safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment, including steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest, hearing protection, and work gloves., • Collaborate closely with other technicians and trades, communicating clearly to coordinate tasks and maintain workflow., • Apply mechanical aptitude to understand how components fit together, visualize the finished installation, and plan the steps needed to reach the final result., • Maintain attention to detail to ensure cable installations are neat, labeled correctly, and compliant with project quality standards., • Identify and resolve basic issues in the field using problem-solving and critical thinking skills, escalating more complex issues when needed., • Support process improvements by contributing ideas and helping implement more efficient methods or workflows on the project., • Work regular and overtime hours as required, including five 10-hour shifts per week, while maintaining consistent attendance., • Travel within the branch or regional territory as needed to support project requirements, when requested., • Perform tasks that require lifting up to 50 pounds and moving up to 75 pounds, as well as working in confined spaces when necessary., • Use the ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals to ensure accurate and safe work. Essential Skills • At least 6 months of hands-on work experience in cabling, construction, installation, or industrial assembly., • 6 months to 1 year of experience working on construction sites, with general knowledge of construction site practices and safety., • Mechanical aptitude with 6 months to 1 year of experience in activities such as working on vehicles, assembling computers, wiring electrical systems, or building models., • Ability to follow and interpret blueprints and construction prints to assemble trays, racks, and lay out wires and cable routes., • Experience with or ability to learn cable installation and management, including cat5 and cat6 wiring, cable trays, and cable organization., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate routing, dressing, and labeling of cables., • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills to address issues that arise during installation and to support process improvements., • Ability to read, write, and deliver clear oral presentations or instructions as needed on the job., • Effective communication skills and the ability to work as a cooperative team member on active construction sites., • Comfort working at heights of approximately 10–12 feet on eco lifts and in other elevated work areas., • Ability to work in confined spaces when required by the project., • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as part of daily tasks., • Ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals such as dial tones., • Capability to work in both indoor and outdoor construction environments as project needs require., • Willingness and ability to travel within the branch or regional territory when needed., • Commitment to regular, reliable attendance and adherence to scheduled shifts. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Prior cabling experience is beneficial but not required, as long as you bring relevant construction, installation, or industrial assembly experience., • Experience with construction, electrical work, maintenance, or wiring is preferred and supports faster onboarding., • Familiarity with data center environments or large industrial facilities is advantageous., • Demonstrated ability to visualize how components fit together, see the end result before completion, and plan the steps to get from start to finish., • Self-motivated and positive approach to work, with a professional demeanor on active construction sites., • Ability to help create, develop, and implement project process improvements in collaboration with the team., • Comfort working in large, active construction sites with significant equipment movement and potential hazards., • Willingness to adapt to changing schedules and project demands, including potential adjustments to shift times., • Interest in long-term project work, with opportunities for continued assignments as additional work is awarded. Work Environment This role is fully on-site in West Des Moines, Iowa, and is performed primarily indoors within large, active construction sites at a data center. The job is approximately 90% inside, with occasional movement between colocation areas that may involve brief exposure to outdoor conditions. You currently work five 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with typical hours around 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., totaling about 50 hours per week; schedules may change based on project demands. The environment includes extensive construction activity, large equipment, and numerous trades working simultaneously, which can be hazardous to individuals unfamiliar with construction sites, especially in a data center setting. You must remain alert, follow safety protocols, and navigate a dynamic landscape with moving machinery and ongoing installations. All workers must wear steel-toed work boots and are on their feet for most of the shift, so comfortable, supportive boots are strongly recommended. The expected dress code includes a clean pair of jeans and a work-appropriate shirt. The client provides a high-visibility vest, hearing protection, and work gloves, and additional personal protective equipment may be required depending on specific tasks. Work may involve heights of 10–12 feet on eco lifts, confined spaces, and frequent lifting and moving of materials. Overall, the environment is fast-paced, physically demanding, and safety-focused, offering exposure to advanced data center infrastructure and modern construction practices. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $40.00/hr.
