Job Description Job Title: Fire Alarm Electrician Job Description The Fire Alarm Electrician installs, wires, tests, and commissions fire alarm systems within school facilities, ensuring all work complies with applicable codes, safety standards, and school requirements to protect students, staff, and property. This role focuses on upgrading and modernizing existing systems in an elementary school addition and remodel environment. Responsibilities • Install fire alarm control panels, smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, horns, strobes, and related fire alarm devices throughout school facilities., • Run, route, and terminate low-voltage fire alarm wiring and conduit in classrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, and common areas., • Mount fire alarm devices securely and accurately according to engineered drawings, blueprints, and manufacturer specifications., • Interpret and follow blueprints and engineered plans to ensure proper device placement, wiring paths, and system configuration., • Integrate fire alarm systems with related building systems such as sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, and mass notification systems when applicable., • Test, troubleshoot, and commission fire alarm systems to verify proper operation and compliance with required codes and standards., • Update and replace outdated fire alarm components as part of an elementary school addition and remodel project., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while adhering to site safety requirements and using appropriate personal protective equipment., • Collaborate with other trades and site personnel to coordinate installation activities and minimize disruption to school operations. Essential Skills • Proficiency in installing fire alarm systems, including control panels, detection devices, notification appliances, and related components., • Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, engineered drawings, and manufacturer specifications., • Experience pulling and terminating fire alarm wire and installing low-voltage conduit., • Knowledge of fire alarm system components, functions, and basic integration with other life safety systems., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate device placement and secure mounting., • Capability to follow safety standards, building codes, and site-specific requirements in a school environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working on fire alarm upgrades in existing facilities, particularly in school or educational environments., • Familiarity with integrating fire alarm systems with sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, and mass notification systems., • Comfort working on addition and remodel projects where existing systems require updates or replacement., • Ability to work full 10-hour shifts and maintain productivity over a 50-hour work week. Work Environment This position is based on an elementary school addition and remodel project focused on updating outdated fire alarm systems. Work takes place primarily inside school buildings, including classrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, and common areas, with exposure to typical construction conditions. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with 10-hour days and a 50-hour work week. The dress code requires jeans, a t-shirt, and steel-toed boots. Personal protective equipment includes a hard hat, gloves, high-visibility vest, and steel-toed boots with approximately 6-inch ankle support. A per diem is provided for each day worked, supporting those who may incur additional daily expenses while on the job. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $35.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
