Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Associate Attorney with deep litigation experience to join our team and handle complex matters particularly in education and school-district law. The ideal candidate will lead litigation strategy and case management for school districts and public agencies, defend and prosecute claims in state and federal court, and advise clients on regulatory, employment, and constitutional issues. This role balances courtroom advocacy, appellate work, client counseling, and supervision of junior attorneys and support staff. Key Responsibilities • Lead and manage complex litigation matters from intake through resolution in state and federal courts, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, hearings, trials, and appeals., • Represent school districts and public agencies in matters involving Title IX, IDEA, special education disputes, Section 1983 claims, ADA/Americans With Disabilities Act claims, FEHA and employment litigation, and constitutional issues., • Provide legal advice and counseling to school district clients and public entities on operational compliance, risk assessment, and policy development (e.g., Brown Act compliance, student and staff discipline, Title IX policies)., • Draft, review, and litigate motions, pleadings, settlement agreements, administrative filings, and appeals briefs; conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on complex legal issues., • Prepare and take depositions, examine witnesses, develop trial themes and exhibits, and provide persuasive courtroom advocacy at hearings and trials., • Supervise, mentor, and train junior attorneys, fellows, and paralegals; delegate work, review legal drafting, and ensure quality control and adherence to deadlines., • Coordinate with outside counsel, insurance carriers, special counsel, and experts as needed; manage outside counsel relationships and budgets., • Manage caseload, litigation budgets, case plans, and electronic discovery workflows; maintain matter budgets and billing in accordance with firm/client requirements., • Conduct risk assessments and settlement evaluations; negotiate settlements where appropriate while protecting client interests and public policy considerations., • Design and deliver training for school administration, board members, and staff on legal topics such as Title IX, special education obligations, ADA accommodations, and open meeting laws., • Engage in appellate strategy and coordinate appellate filings when necessary; support complex statutory interpretation and constitutional litigation., • Stay current with evolving education law, employment law, and relevant statutory and regulatory developments affecting public agencies and school districts. Qualifications • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active admission to the state bar (California bar admission preferred given Brown Act and California education law experience)., • Minimum of 3+ years of litigation experience, with a demonstrated record handling complex civil litigation in state and federal courts; significant experience representing school districts or public agencies strongly preferred., • Proven expertise in core required subject areas: Litigation, Attorney roles in civil litigation, Education Law, School District representation, Title IX, IDEA and Special Education matters, Section 1983 claims, ADA / Americans With Disabilities Act, Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Brown Act, Employment Litigation, and Constitutional Law., • Demonstrated trial experience (bench and/or jury), strong appellate briefing experience, and comfort arguing motions and hearings in court., • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; ability to produce clear, persuasive briefs, memos, and client advisories under tight deadlines., • Experience supervising and mentoring junior attorneys and support staff, with strong project and case management skills, including e-discovery and litigation technology familiarity., • Strong client counseling skills, professional judgment, discretion, and the ability to present complex legal concepts to non-lawyers (school administrators, boards, and stakeholders)., • Ability to manage multiple matters concurrently, prioritize competing deadlines, and maintain high standards of accuracy and ethical practice., • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and with external partners (insurance carriers, experts, outside counsel)., • Nice-to-have: experience or familiarity with Criminal Defense, Civil Litigation beyond education matters, Contract Review and Contract Drafting, Appeals practice, Regulatory Compliance, Mergers and Acquisitions, Intellectual Property matters (including Patent Law, Trademark Law, and Copyright Law), Corporate Law, Employment Law and Labor Law, Real Estate Law, Bankruptcy, Statutory Interpretation, Legal Project Management, Risk Assessment methodologies, and advanced Case Management experience.
