Job Description Shop Helper – Motor and Generator Service & Repair . Job Description This role supports a busy motor and generator service and repair shop by assisting skilled trades in the breakdown, repair, and overhaul of electric motors and generators. You will handle incoming equipment from the field, help disassemble and clean components, and prepare parts for repair and reassembly using a variety of tools and equipment. This position offers hands-on experience across multiple trades and a clear pathway to grow into a skilled role such as mechanic, welder, machinist, painter, winder operator, or quality control technician. . Responsibilities • Assist mechanics, welders, machinists, painters, winder operators, and quality control technicians with daily repair and service tasks., • Receive motors, generators, and related rotating equipment from the field and move them safely within the shop using forklifts and overhead cranes., • Disassemble motors and generators, including removing components and subassemblies according to established procedures., • Clean and wash parts in the wash bay using appropriate cleaning agents, tools, and equipment., • Perform sandblasting of parts to remove rust, paint, and contaminants in preparation for inspection, repair, or painting., • Inspect parts visually and with basic measuring tools to identify wear, damage, or defects and report findings to senior technicians., • Place components into heat treat ovens and varnish tanks as directed to support the repair and overhaul process., • Retrieve and stage parts, tools, and materials for senior-level technicians to keep work flowing efficiently., • Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for disassembly, cleaning, basic assembly, and general shop tasks., • Support basic troubleshooting and assembly tasks under the guidance of experienced technicians., • Follow work instructions, basic blueprints, and shop guidelines to ensure accurate and consistent work., • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper disposal of waste and adherence to housekeeping standards., • Adhere to all safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment in areas such as the wash bay, sandblasting area, and heat treat oven., • Work in physically and mentally demanding areas, especially during the initial training period, and remain productive in hot and challenging conditions., • Communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and other departments to coordinate work and resolve issues., • Demonstrate initiative by asking questions, seeking training opportunities, and learning the full overhaul process for motors and generators. . Essential Skills • At least 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment or service repair shop., • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical components, motors, pumps, or rotating equipment., • Proven experience with material handling in an industrial or shop setting., • Ability to safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes or willingness to learn under supervision., • Hands-on experience using hand tools and power tools for repair, disassembly, and assembly tasks., • Basic ability to use a tape measure and other simple measuring tools accurately., • Effective communication skills to work closely with a team of skilled tradespeople., • Willingness and physical ability to perform demanding work, including lifting, standing, and working in hot, noisy, and dusty environments., • Demonstrated reliability, strong work ethic, and willingness to work overtime and occasional Saturdays. . Work Environment The role is based in a medium to large service and repair shop for electric motors and generators, spread across two buildings that share a parking lot and employ approximately 38 people. The facility is non-climate controlled and reflects the nature of heavy industrial work: organized but not pristine, with older equipment and active repair operations. You will work in areas such as the wash bay, sandblasting area, and near the heat treat oven, where conditions can be extremely hot, especially in the summer, and may be dusty or noisy. Helpers typically start in some of the most physically and mentally demanding areas to build skills and resilience. Standard hours follow a day shift schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime common and total weekly hours often exceeding 50; Saturday half days are also common. Required attire includes steel-toe footwear, jeans, a work shirt, and safety glasses, with additional protective gear such as full protective suits used when sandblasting or painting. The environment is highly collaborative, with mechanics, welders, machinists, painters, winder operators, quality control, and helpers working closely together around industrial tools, forklifts, overhead cranes, wash bays, heat treat ovens, varnish tanks, and other heavy equipment. . . . . . . . . . . Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Missouri City, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.
