Job DescriptionDescription: Night Shift RN, 7:00PM-7:30AM JOB FUNCTION: Responsible for the planning, executing, directing and evaluating direct and indirect nursing care given to the post-surgical patient. The responsibility includes the preparation, assembly and organization of the environment, equipment and supplies necessary to perform the activities for the recovery of the post-surgical patient. JOB RELATIONSHIPS: • Supervised by: Inpatient Clinical Manager., • Employees supervised: Certified Nurse Assistant and Unit Clerk, • Interrelationships: Works closely with patients, families, physicians and their staff, staff within the Inpatient department as well as staff from other departments in the facility., • Independent Action: Fully dependent upon policies, procedures and directives of Inpatient Clinical Manager and/or physician orders. PAY RANGE: Hourly position-Non-Exempt Position Commensurate with Education and Experience JOB RESPONSIBILITIES • Patient safety is number one priority. Ability to respond to emergent situations by performing ACLS protocol when required., • Contributes to and maintains a positive customer service experience for patients, physicians and staff., • Responds in a timely manner (within 15 minutes) to Post-OP request to receive report, so as to assure efficient movement of patients, • Receives patients from Post-OP area, assesses patient’s condition on admission., • Closely observes and monitors the medicated post-op patient, by taking vital signs, SaO2, and Co2 monitoring., • Able to competently provide care to post-surgical patients until dismissal., • Monitors patient’s post-operative progress and documents it in the medical record per policy., • Monitors patient pain levels and medicates appropriately. Contacts physician with pain control issues. Reassess pain medication effectiveness within appropriate time of administration. Documents reassessment on the eMAR., • Able to demonstrate competency using computer charting., • Completes medication verification on each patient., • Knowledgeable of frequently administered medications and possible side effects. Communicates pertinent medication information to patients., • Communicates problems or concerns about patient to appropriate staff or physician., • Meets or exceeds standards when performing nursing duties., • Provides education on home care and gives written discharge instruction to patient and family., • Instructs patient/family on post-anesthesia side effects., • Able to setup and operate SCDs, foot pumps, and other applicable equipment for assigned department., • Able to perform 12 lead EKG., • Maintains BLS and ACLS or ALS certification. Updates nursing licensure in a timely manner., • Maintains i-STAT competency; follows laboratory procedures for testing and reporting; adheres to laboratory QC, calibrations and maintenance procedures; follows procedures when test systems are not within acceptable limits; able to identify problems and know procedures to follow to correct the problems; documents all corrective actions., • Completes education in a timely manner and ensures understanding of new material, including assignments in Healthstreams and PowerDMS., • Maintains crash cart (knows location of cart, able to turn on Defibrillator, familiar with medications cart, and able to connect patient to 3 lead cardiac monitor)., • Attends staff meetings and participates to improve unit safety and processes., • Complete documentation of nursing care and interventions, including nursing care plans on each patient., • Assists with restocking assigned areas as needed., • Follow the Standards of Conduct outlined in the employee handbook as well as the Behavior Standards., • Comply with the Corporate Responsibility program, adhering to all applicable laws and regulations., • Completes all mandatory training/in-services and certification requirements., • Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of registered nursing. Must maintain current RN license with the State of Kansas. Current BLS certification required. ALS certification required, but will allow 6 months to obtain., • Job Knowledge/Skills: Verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to deal with stress is a necessity in dealing with subordinates, employees, physicians, their office staff, and vendors., • Experience: One year critical care hospital experience, preferably in a surgical care setting., • Physical Demands: Requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach. Often required to stand, walk, sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required to include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus., • Work Environment: Must be able to walk or stand for hours during job performance. May be exposed to communicable diseases and radiation., • Handling of Confidential Data: Handles confidential data professionally according to hospital policy and procedures.
