Job Description JOB SPECIFICATION Fabrication Labourer Department: Production / Manufacturing Reports To: Production Manager Classification: Full-Time | Hourly POSITION SUMMARY The Fabrication Labourer is responsible for the hands-on assembly, wiring, and preparation of industrial enclosure units from component stage through to finished, crated product. This role works from detailed Standard Operating Procedures and requires precision with both power and hand tools, attention to sequencing, and a strong quality control mindset. The position operates across multiple stages of the production process including panel preparation, electrical rough-in, hardware installation, and final packing for shipment. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Panel and Enclosure Preparation • Prepare structural panels by applying surface treatments to exposed materials prior to assembly, • Read and interpret assembly templates to accurately mark hole layouts on panels, • Drill multiple hole types and sizes using standard drill bits, step bits, and hole saws according to specified tolerances, • Install rivet nuts (riv nuts) into drilled holes using pneumatic and manual installation tools, • Use a laser level to establish precise bore trajectories across panels before channel boring, • Bore wire channels through panel foam cores using extended boring bits, following marked trajectories, • Cut out foam cavities using oscillating tools, removing material to specified depths and grid patterns for component housing, • Perform metal cutting and grinding with an angle grinder to create openings in panel faces, • Seal openings and seams with silicone in accordance with assembly requirements Wiring and Wire Management • Feed multi-wire bundles through bored conduit channels using appropriate pulling tools, • Install PVC conduit within panel channels to protect wire runs, • Apply snake-skin wire sleeving to bundled wire runs and secure with zip-ties, • Label all individual wires and circuits according to the wiring schematic at time of installation, • Strip wire ends, install ferrules, and crimp connectors to specification, • Organize and route wire bundles to maintain clearance, separation, and accessibility for downstream assembly Hardware and Component Mounting • Install door frames and associated hardware into panel openings using self-tapping flanged screws to specified torque and fastener counts, • Mount control panel enclosures to wall panels using riv nut bolt patterns, verifying flush alignment, • Assemble and install timing display hardware, verifying correct orientation and sequence of components before permanent attachment, • Melt and form tab posts using a flat-tipped soldering iron to secure display components, • Install fan assemblies and associated ductwork, drilling and tapping threads as required, • Attach wire management tracks using adhesives and double-sided tape at dimensionally specified locations, • Install cam locks and verify correct orientation relative to mating panels, • Remove and replace cam lock hardware using oscillating tools where required for enclosure clearance, • Apply expanding foam to cavities requiring gap fill and allow appropriate cure time before proceeding Quality Control and Verification • Verify component orientation, phase, and polarity before final fastening on critical electrical assemblies, • Inspect wire labeling against schematics before enclosure closure, • Confirm fastener counts and hole alignment on all mounted assemblies, • Perform visual and dimensional checks at each stage gate before advancing to the next process step, • Identify and flag any non-conformances to the Production Manager before proceeding Crating and Shipment Preparation • Apply grip tape and protective foam to panels and components in preparation for crating, • Pack finished assemblies into designated crates following a defined layering and foam protection sequence, • Wrap and protect fragile sub-assemblies including wiring harnesses, glass panels, and fan banks using foam and cardboard, • Install crate lids and apply serial number labels and stenciling per shipping requirements, • Record and verify serial numbers on all crates prior to release, • Pack component boxes with hardware kits and specified loose items per the assembly checklist, • Assemble wooden shipping crates to dimension, securing with appropriate fasteners and corner blocking REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES Tool Operation • Power drill and driver - multiple bit types and sizes, • Step bit and hole saw operation for progressive diameter drilling, • Angle grinder for metal cutting and surface preparation, • Oscillating multi-tool for foam removal and flush cutting, • Extended boring bit operation with laser level alignment, • Pneumatic and manual rivet nut (riv nut) installation tools, • Soldering iron for thermoplastic tab forming, • Wire strippers, crimpers, and ferrule press tools Technical Competencies • Ability to read and follow detailed, multi-step assembly SOPs with precision, • Template reading and transfer - accurately marking hole patterns from printed templates, • Dimensional measurement and layout using tape measure, ruler, combination square, and laser level, • Working knowledge of angles, bevels, and their application to layout, cut planning, and component fitting, • Basic electrical wire management - feeding, labeling, routing, stripping, and terminating, • Silicone and adhesive application with appropriate surface prep, • Foam cavity work - cutting, removing, and filling to specified dimensions, • Hardware identification - fastener types, sizes, and appropriate application, • Crating and protective packaging techniques Behavioral Competencies • High attention to detail and commitment to following step sequences without deviation, • Able to work methodically under production schedules without sacrificing quality, • Self-directed quality checking at each stage prior to progression, • Comfortable escalating concerns or non-conformances without delay, • Physical capability to handle panels and assemblies, work at bench height, and perform repetitive precision tasks, • Ability to read and comprehend technical documentation including schematics and SOPs WORKING CONDITIONS • Indoor manufacturing environment with exposure to adhesives, silicone, foam dust, and cutting debris, • PPE required: safety glasses, hearing protection when operating power tools, gloves as task requires, • Work involves lifting and repositioning large panel assemblies - team lifts and mechanical assists available, • Standing for extended periods at assembly bench and crating stations, • Exposure to soldering iron heat and angle grinder sparks during specific process steps PREFERRED EXPERIENCE • 1-3+ year in a manufacturing, fabrication, millwork, or industrial assembly environment, • Experience with power tools in a production setting, • Exposure to basic electrical wiring or wire harness assembly is an asset, • Experience reading assembly drawings, work orders, or SOPs, • Forklift or material handling equipment certification is an asset, • Comfortable using a tape measure, combination square, and angle/bevel gauges for layout and verification work, • Working knowledge of common angles, bevels, and how they apply to layout, cut planning, and component fitting WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We are hiring for both skilled production roles and future leadership.
