Job Description JOB SUMMARY Install, maintain, and repair heating and air conditioning equipment in all buildings owned by the Birmingham Airport Authority by performing skilled installation, regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs. Also manage computerized system controls. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Maintains and performs repairs, calibrations, testing, troubleshooting, modifications, replacements, and installations of refrigeration equipment to include chillers, packaged air conditioning units, air dryers and dehumidifying equipment and other similar equipment., • Maintains and performs repairs, calibrations, testing, troubleshooting, modifications, replacements, and installations of HVAC equipment to gas, electric and hot water heating systems, VAV boxes, air handling units, ducts, chilled water systems, pumps, fan units, valves, lamps, cooling tower, damper and valve actuators, T-stats, pneumatic systems, coils, condensate systems and other similar type equipment., • Measures, calculates, balances, and adjusts CFM readings for air handling systems. Performs specialized troubleshooting and repairs, and preventive maintenance on gas, electric and hot water heating systems, VAV boxes, pumps, packaged air conditioning units, air handling, units, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, control valves and dampers, air compressors, room T-stats, air ducts, condenser and evaporator coils and other similar equipment., • Installs, tests, calibrates, troubleshoots existing and new control systems, including analog and digital, metering devices, variable frequency and variable speed drive controllers, turbine and vortex flow meters and other devices., • Uses testing and calibration equipment to evaluate system performance and diagnose problems. Evaluates test data and recommends needed repairs, modifications, and replacements. Prepares and submits periodic reports to Facilities Manager., • Perform routine preventive maintenance of light and heavy-duty heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment., • Maintains and performs repairs, testing, calibrations, troubleshooting, modifications, replacements and installations of automatic temperature controls, controllers, relays, variable drives, damper actuators, pneumatic and electronic control systems, boiler fire control systems and other similar equipment., • Rebuilds, modifies, and repairs control devices and components including valves, dampers, receiver-controls, relays, control panels, sensors, transmitters, thermostats, meters, and other similar equipment., • Directs the work of the HVAC mechanic, maintenance repair workers, and/or outside contractors engaged in all phases of installation, maintenance, and repair of heating and air-conditioning systems of the airport facility., • Maintain appropriate records of all maintenance work assigned., • Perform emergency repairs promptly and efficiently., • High School Diploma or GED equivalent. A diploma from an accredited secondary vocational or technical school in the field of HVAC is preferred. Previous apprenticeship appreciated., • Ten (10) years of commercial or industrial HVAC experience required. Experience must include instrumentation, controls, and refrigeration equipment., • EPA approved Universal CFC certification is required., • Current license from the Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors is required., • Certification in Instrumentation and Controls is required., • EPA approved “Universal” type CFC certification., • A valid driver’s license is required. REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES • Ability and willingness to use a variety of tools, meters, lifts, and ladders to perform job duties., • Ability to communicate orally and in-writing with co-workers and supervisors., • Ability to work independently including taking initiative where needed even if not directed., • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints, drawings, and floor plans i.e., electrical, mechanical, plumbing and HVAC., • Ability to work after hours on weekends or holidays with little or no notice as required to support the 365 day/24-hour operation of the Birmingham Airport Authority., • Ability to manage your time well including prioritizing work assignments., • Required to stand and walk a significant portion of each shift; will also sit at a computer from time to time. Must use your hands to finger, handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, climb ladders, bend and kneel. Excellent vision and hearing critical., • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds and carry or maneuver heavier items, either with help or appropriate devices., • Must be able to work in confined and noisy spaces., • Must be able to work any of the three shifts at the airport (6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 2:00 pm-10:30 pm; 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) as needed.
