Job Description Theatrical Costumer Role The Theatrical Costumer has a keen eye for detail, a passion for costuming or fashion, ability to present costumes in a visually appealing way, and excellent customer service skills. When not selecting or curating shows, The Theatrical Costumer alters, tags, presses, and bags costumes for each actor. And, post-show, works to ensure costumes are checked in, cleaned, and returned to the warehouse in good repair. Essential Duties and Responsibilities β’ Sews costumes using needle and thread and industrial sewing machines., β’ Working in an environment where there are fast paced and slow seasons or periods., β’ Take up and let down hems to shorten or lengthen sleeves and hems., β’ Let out or take in seams in costumes to improve fit., β’ Remove stitches from costumes using seam rippers or razor blades., β’ Read tags and follow verbal directions to repair and alter costumes., β’ Measure costume parts such as sleeves and pant legs and mark or pin-fold alteration lines., β’ Record altered and completed costumes and instructions on costume inventory sheet., β’ Support other aspects of costume craft and construction, laundering, pressing, bagging, writing costume descriptions, and pulling and re-stocking costumes in costume vault., β’ Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and senior management., β’ Bonus if you possess patterning, draping, soft sculpture, screen-printing, airbrushing, fabric dyeing, hand-painting, or prop construction skills. Education & Experience: β’ 2-4 years of related experience., β’ Fashion history knowledge., β’ Excellent customer service skills., β’ Knowledge of theatre production, especially costuming., β’ Strong problem-solving and analytical skills., β’ Good judgement and ability to make timely, sound decisions., β’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills., β’ Ability to work independently and as a member of a team., β’ Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions., β’ Flexibility and willingness to work in an environment with constantly changing priorities., β’ High school diploma required; college degree preferred., β’ Demonstrates professional behavior and communication with people at all levels and from various backgrounds at all times., β’ Proficient computer skills, especially when using business software (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Word); ability to learn new software., β’ Ability to multi-task, prioritize and maintain accurate, well-organized records and workflows.
