Job DescriptionDescription: General Statement of Duties Performs responsible unskilled to skilled duties in the maintenance and care of parks, ball fields and related facilities in the Towns Parks and Recreation. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs duties with assigned crew in manual to semi-skilled tasks. Employee completes work safely and within deadlines. Work involves operating riding mowers, tractors, line and drag attachments, weed eaters, chain saws, blowers, etc. to cut grass, prepare ball fields, trim, clean fields, grounds and facilities, and to perform other horticultural tasks. Work includes playground equipment inspection and repair. Judgment and initiative is required. Employee must be able to perform manual labor, as well as semi-skilled to skilled duties, while abiding by safety rules and regulations. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards associated with parks maintenance work, fumes, odors, dust, mists and oils. Duties involving equipment operation may result in exposure to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, and is evaluated through observation of facilities and parks, discussion, and public acceptance. Duties and Responsibilities Serves as a member of a crew of full and part time temporary employees; completing work in accordance with work orders, in timely manner and following safety standards. Performs grounds’ maintenance duties including mowing, trimming shrubs and trees, and assisting with fertilizing, planting and spreading seed. Performs landscaping duties including pruning, planting and mulching. Performs maintenance, minor construction, and repair duties on recreational facilities and, playgrounds, picnic areas, and other recreational areas; checks equipment for safety; paints; and repairs plumbing. Drags and marks ball fields and levels dirt infields and base lines; may operate tractor with drag and lining attachments; operates front end loader, dump truck, riding and hand mowers, weed eaters, blowers chainsaw and other maintenance equipment. Sprays various herbicide and pesticide treatments in landscape. Drives a truck and picks up supplies. Additional Job Duties Assists with events; picks up trash. Performs additional duties as required. Requirements: Knowledges, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in the parks and recreation maintenance. General knowledge of the work hazards, related liabilities, and applicable safety standards (Occupational Safety and Health Act). General knowledge of turf management and landscaping methods and techniques. Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools, including tractor, drag and line attachments, complex riding mowers, chain saws, etc. Ability to complete work correctly and safely. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisor, and citizens involved in use of parks, athletic fields and recreational activities. Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods of time. Ability to exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with the public. Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to use measurement devices; to make visual inspections of completed work to determine neatness and thoroughness; and to operate equipment and motor vehicles. Desirable Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and considerable related experience supplemented by training in landscaping and turf management that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Special Requirements • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license., • Possession NC Pesticide License or willingness and ability to become licensed.
