Job Description POSITION SUMMARY The Police Sergeant works under the direction of a Police Lieutenant; supervises, trains, and mentors subordinate officers in the performance of their duties. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1. As a sworn Police Officer, performs duties that consist of providing community protection. • Places own life or personal safety at risk., • Performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances of the state of Utah and the City of South Salt Lake., • Prevents, detects and investigates misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and city ordinance violations; controls vehicular traffic; maintains a visible profile to discourage crime; performs surveillance functions; follows the department mission statement and values; testifies in court on criminal cases; maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on incidents or subordinate inquires., • Prepares a variety of reports and records including shift end reports and month end reports; implements department orders to include strategic plans, operational orders, special orders and personnel orders; monitors and approves submitted case reports, time cards, vacation and sick requests; participates in all department training activities; promotes a positive working environment while aligning department personnel to successfully meet department objectives., • Provides community information through speeches to citizen groups and answers all citizen inquiries; assumes department direction and administration in the absence of the Lieutenant. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS • Five years of law enforcement experience., • Must have completed the Peace Officer Standards and Training, • O.S.T. Category I certification and Police Officer II status, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience, • Must have experience as a Field Trainer and/or have been an instructor with one of the various ancillary groups including but not limited to: Force on Force, EVO, Firearms, Motors, • Must have POST Mid-Management Certification, • Strong knowledge of search and seizure, criminal law, civil law, employment law, case law, and constitutional law; strong knowledge of officer safety, report writing, investigation of crimes, crime scene investigation, emergency medical procedures and techniques, and proper use of firearms; knowledge of uniform police procedures and city codes; knowledge of staffing, budgeting, internal affairs procedures, community policing, and training techniques; general understanding of state and local statutes; familiarization with city and department policy and procedures as well as the department professional standards and conduct manual., • Skill in the use of a wide variety of law enforcement equipment., • No police officer employed by the City of South Salt Lake will establish residence more than 40 miles from the center of the city., • Probationary officers who live outside the 40 mile limit will be required to move within the 40 mile limit within nine (9) months of being hired. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination., • Officers employed prior to the effective date of this policy, living outside the 40 mile limit are exempt from the residency portion of this policy. Officers who are currently exempt from residency requirements who then move following the effective date of this policy, may not move any further away from the city than their distance when the policy took effect., • For the purpose of Policy 706 the 40-mile limit will be measured from the following point: Mill Creek and 300 West (2970 South 300 West) PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met or will be encountered by an employee while successfully performing the essential functions of this job. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, extreme cold, and vibration.
