Job Description Job Title: Welder and Fitter – Structural Mining Equipment Job Description This position focuses on structural welding, fitting, and fabrication to repair and refurbish large-scale mining excavators and related heavy equipment. You will work inside a large, swamp-cooled fabrication bay, performing critical structural repairs on abrasion-resistant and mild steels, ensuring the reliability and safety of oversized mining machinery used in demanding industrial environments. Responsibilities • Perform structural welding repairs on large mining excavators and related heavy equipment affected by normal wear and tear., • Repair cracks, fractures, and worn components resulting from heavy equipment operation., • Weld a variety of materials, including AR400 and other abrasion-resistant steels, as well as mild and softer steels., • Gouge out defective or failed welds using appropriate techniques as part of repair and rebuild activities., • Apply daily fabrication skills to cut, bend, fit, modify, and reinforce structural components., • Use an oxy-acetylene torch to cut steel and to preheat AR steel prior to welding., • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and specifications to plan and execute repair work accurately., • Maintain high standards of quality, accuracy, and workmanship on critical structural components., • Operate power tools and related equipment for grinding, cutting, and preparing materials., • Work safely in and around confined spaces and oversized equipment, following all safety procedures., • Proven experience as a structural welder in heavy equipment, mining, or industrial environments., • Proficiency welding abrasion-resistant steels such as AR400 and similar materials, as well as mild steel., • Experience with carbon arc gouging or similar weld removal techniques for defective welds., • Strong fabrication skills, including layout, fit-up, cutting, bending, grinding, and structural reinforcement., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications., • Hands-on experience using an oxy-acetylene torch for cutting and preheating steel., • Proficiency with power tools commonly used in fabrication and repair work., • Ability to work safely in a large bay environment around oversized mining machinery and in confined spaces., • Strong attention to detail with a consistent focus on safety, quality, and workmanship., • Experience in structural welding on thick-gauge, hardened steel components., • Experience reinforcing and modifying existing structures to extend equipment life., • Comfort working in physically demanding roles that involve heavy materials and large equipment. Work Environment The role is based in a large industrial fabrication bay equipped with swamp cooling to improve comfort in a heavy-duty environment. Work is highly hands-on and physically demanding, involving frequent lifting, positioning, and welding on oversized mining machinery and thick-gauge steel components. You will regularly use welding equipment, oxy-acetylene torches, power tools, and fabrication tools in a production-style setting. The environment is team-focused and collaborative, requiring clear communication and adherence to safety protocols, particularly when working around large moving equipment and in confined spaces. Typical attire includes appropriate industrial workwear and required personal protective equipment suitable for welding, cutting, and fabrication activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mesa, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.50 - $29.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
