The Role and the Department The Directorate of Advanced Research Computing (ARC) provides a broad computational capability to underpin and help define the nature of research and innovation that can be undertaken with the institution. ARC's mission is to deliver a coherent strategy for the computational support of research: enabling research and innovation to be at the forefront of computational practice; enabling academic leadership through the adoption and evolution of leading technology; fostering associated expertise; and enhancing interdisciplinary collaborations. Leading-edge platforms including High Performance Computing, computational and cutting-edge data analytics methods, and growth and retention of vital capacity in research software engineering and technical R&D are at the core of this endeavour. We organise our activity under three main pillars: 1. Research Computing Platforms, 2. Research Software Engineering, 3. Developing researcher computational skills Which is delivered by the Administration, Research Computing Platforms (RCP) and Research Software Engineering (RSE) teams. Through collaboration between the Institute for Data Science, Department of Computer Science and ARC, several grants have been secured under the umbrella of the UK's of Digital Research Technology Professionals (dRTP) programme. These projects aim to create an upskilling and code porting landscape - predominantly for simulations and AI running on HPC machinery - for the whole UK DRI community. Their mission includes creating material for the RTP upskilling, running upskilling events, establishing a national performance assessment service, conducting performance assessments and benchmarking case studies, and helping codes to transition into the era of accelerate compute. You will be embedded into the SHAREing () project team, working closely with the PI and other project members, the platforms team within ARC and realise synergies with related activity within Durham and Nationally. We expect the successful candidate to develop specialist knowledge and expertise across several advanced computing technologies core to the deliverables that are part of the grant and services delivered by ARC longer-term, including the following technologies: • Compiled languages (e.g. C/Fortran), • Shared and distributed memory programming tools (e.g. OpenMP, MPI), • Accelerator programming (e.g. CUDA, OpenCL, SYCL), • Machine Learning libraries such as Tensorflow or PyTorch, • Serial and parallel debugging and profiling, • Parallel numerical algorithms and libraries, • System software stack administration and novel/experimental hardware. Over the course of the appointment, the candidate will be supported through a development plan towards a substantive grade 7 position, a case for which will be made at the appropriate time, subject to funding. The Role and Department As Senior Fire Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for applying advanced fire engineering principles in the design and assessment of buildings across a diverse estate. This includes the technical delivery of fire safety services, design and drawing appraisals, and ensuring compliance with Approved Document B, BS9999, BS9991 or performance-based fire engineering solutions. You will provide expert advice on a wide range of fire safety issues such as compartmentation, passive and active fire protection systems, occupancy levels, fire escape strategies, emergency lighting, alarms, fire suppression systems, fire-fighting equipment, and specialist systems. You will also assess fire safety arrangements for disabled occupants, fire appliance access, and construction-phase fire safety. You will produce and review Fire Safety Manuals and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle. The Role and Department The Student Journey Futures (SJF) Programme, jointly led by Computing and Information Services (CIS) and Student and Academic Services Directorate (SASD), is delivering a multi-million pound programme of change. This role will be a 2-year fixed term role on one of the universities key strategic projects. This role will report into the SJF Programme Director but will work in a matrix management structure with close links into our Strategy Delivery Unit for alignment to our Change and Project Delivery approaches. The Role Reception Helpdesk Assistants act as the first point of contact for students, staff, and visitors in colleges providing a highly responsive service to customers as well as a professional and friendly welcome service. The Role and the Department The Student and Academic Services Directorate provides a professional administrative support service to staff, students and potential students of Durham University. We are looking for an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a research project based in the groups of Prof. Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and Prof. John Evans. The project is part of a new £7m EPSRC funded Programme Grant that brings together a team of researchers from the universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester investigating the formation of Molecular Solid Solutions (MoSS). Solid solutions are created when atoms or ions of a dopant are incorporated within the crystal structure of a host. Even at minute quantities, this can significantly alter the properties of crystals. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties, such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution. The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in X-ray diffraction. Knowledge of databases, crystallisation and other characterisation methods for molecular crystals is a must. The key responsibilities are to develop a database of MoSS, to study MoSS with various diffraction methods, to develop code to automate the characterisation of MoSS with diffraction and other methods. The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student during the duration of the position and will have significant of opportunities for career development. Do you have an established background in modelling of molecular crystals? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research-intensive universities? We are looking for an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a research project based in the groups of Prof. Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and Prof. John Evans. The project is part of a new £7m EPSRC funded Programme Grant that brings together a team of researchers from the universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester investigating the formation of Molecular Solid Solutions (MoSS). Solid solutions are created when atoms or ions of a dopant are incorporated within the crystal structure of a host. Even at minute quantities, this can significantly alter the properties of crystals. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties, such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution. The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in the modelling of molecular crystals. The key responsibilities are to develop, test and implement different modelling methodologies into novel workflows to predict MoSS formation. The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student during the duration of the position and will have significant of opportunities for career development. The Role The Bourne-Worster group are looking for a postdoctoral research assistant (PDRA) for 2.5 years to join them in exploring environment effects on the photodynamic properties of chromophores. The project is funded by the PI's recently awarded Royal Society University Research Fellowship 'Designing photocatalysts for the circular economy: environmental control of chromophore photochemistry'. Its particular focus will be a detailed comparative study of chlorophyll pigments in photosynthetic antenna complexes and reaction centres, with the aim of isolating the features of the protein environment that optimise chlorophyll towards energy transfer (in the antenna complexes) or charge transfer (in the reaction centres). In the course of this project you will: • Characterise the properties of the protein environment in terms of appropriate chemical descriptors (e.g. polarity, cavity shape, pH), • Perform molecular dynamics simulations to sample a dynamic range of protein-pigment conformations, • Construct a series of QM-MM models to systematically consider the contributions of individual environmental influences., • Carry out quantum chemical calculations of excited state properties., • Implement any code necessary to construct the models described above (where open-source code or implementations in standard software do not already exist)., • Work alongside the PI and other group members to develop more efficient methods for accessing the excited state and dynamics properties of large chromophores. The Role The postholder will contribute to the UKRI-funded Great British Chemicals (GBC) Hub, a seven-year national programme bringing together 10 UK universities, industry partners, and policymakers to accelerate the transformation of the UK chemical sector towards net to zero. The PDRA will develop and apply digital technologies at the intersection of blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainable chemistry. In particular, the role will involve: (i) designing blockchain architectures and smart contracts for CO2 credit tracking, tokenisation of CO2 derived products; (ii) integrating blockchain systems into AI-driven monitoring, predictive analytics, and digital twins (virtual models of CO2 conversion processes that mirror real-world performance) to support real-time optimisation. The position will evolve over time with strict deadlines. The postholder will closely work with Dr. Arzé Karam (Project Lead) and collaborators across the hub, contributing to the advancement of the project and helping to deliver the GBC Hub's ambition to create blockchain- and AI-enabled CO2-to-products markets.
