The role Are you ready to lead the way in geotechnical excellence across Wales? We're looking for a Lead Specialist Geotechnical Engineer to join our team and become the go-to expert for geotechnical advice on landfills and EPR installations. In this pivotal role, you'll ensure that permitted sites are engineered to the highest standards, safeguarding our environment and communities. You'll collaborate with hydrogeologists and contaminated land specialists, providing expert guidance on groundwater pollution, remediation, agricultural consultations, and environmental investigations. Your work will shape NRW's regulatory approach to geoscience-interpreting legislation, developing policy and guidance, and creating tools that empower our teams. This is a unique opportunity to influence national policy, manage high-profile projects, and represent NRW on complex and contentious issues. You'll be part of a dynamic team within our Operations department, reporting to the Geoscience Team Leader. We offer flexible working arrangements and a supportive hybrid working environment. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance. Interviews will be face to face (details of time and location will be shared in advance) Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date. What you will do Provide expert geotechnical advice for landfills and Installations, ensuring permitted landfill sites and other EPR Installations are engineered to the highest standards. This includes assessment of CQA Plans and reports. Lead and project manage specific and complex issues that require development of NRW policies, strategies, plans, programmes including support on casework that is novel, contentious or of high public interest. Provide advice to WG and other bodies in Wales and the UK as appropriate, and in-turn review and advise on the produced policy, plans and strategies. Retain ownership and oversight of Geoscience policy area to ensure integrity of NRW approaches with Welsh Government, Central Government and EU Policy intent. Advise on evidence needs and opportunities, commission evidence & project manage evidence projects, in line with the agreed evidence programme. Maintain a detailed working knowledge of the assigned sector(s) identifying the implications of legislative, technology and market changes for Natural Resources Wales and the sector(s). Contribute to task and finish groups, commissioned through the Business Boards, to prepare defined products as required. Steer the overview and ownership of engagement with Welsh Government on the specific policy areas related to Geoscience. Representing the organisation in high profile and contentious issues in the public arena. Share your knowledge and expertise to help solve problems, supporting all Heads of Business as required. Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills Applications to this role will be assessed based on the following criteria both at shortlisting and interview. BSc or MSc in geology or civil engineering or closely related subject with experience of geotechnical work. Knowledge of: Welsh, UK and EU legislation related to Geotechnical issues, Welsh & UK Governments & EU policy drivers in Geotechnical issues, and the issues and opportunities in Wales. Knowledge and practical understanding of the range of partners and stakeholders and industries involved with Geo Technical issues in Wales. Experience of: In-depth understanding of the Geotechnical discipline/ topic and the complex range of drivers and barriers to delivery. Working in a programme and project management environment with Project Management experience and/or qualifications. You will be a member of a relevant professional institution and have achieved Corporate Membership of a Professional body at Chartered status or working towards chartership.
