Position Summary: Participates in surgical procedures, assists the registered nurse in‐patient care, maintains aseptic technique, prepares sterile and non‐sterile supplies and equipment. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon as required. Education, License & Cert: 1. Has successfully completed a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization., 3. Provides evidence that the person was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015; or, 4. Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.; or, 6. Completion of hospital and department specific orientation., 7. Perform basic aseptic technique in accordance to policy and procedure of Corning Hospital., 8. Basic knowledge of instrumentation for minor cases., 9. Scrub minor cases alone., 10. Working knowledge of electrocautery, suction apparatus, surgical tables, autoclave and steris processes and patient safety principles in the OR., 11. Knowledge of surgical anatomy for each case scrubbed., 12. Know surgical terminology specific to each case scrubbed., 13. Knowledge of standard precaution guidelines of Corning Hospital, 14. Knowledge of instrumentation for all cases., 15. Scrub all cases offered in the Operating Room., 16. Knowledge of the use of specialty equipment, i.e.: ophthalmology microscope, laser, video endoscopy equipment, fracture table)., 17. Certification as an OR technician recommended., 18. Functions in an “on call” capacity when assigned., 20. Participates in patient care under the supervision of the surgeon, professional nurse and anesthesiologist., 21. Is authorized to access secured storage areas in the performance of essential job functions and duties., 22. Assists in the care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment., 23. Works with Central Supply staff to ensure sterility of equipment., 24. Performs supportive functions related to surgical procedures following principles of sterile technique., 25. Follows Standard Precautions and utilizes disease specific precaution guidelines as per CDC guidelines., 26. Utilizes and maintains surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s recommendations and department guidelines., 27. Follows hospital safety guidelines., 28. Follows all hospital Policies and Procedures., 29. Participates and actively supports PI activities., 30. Maintains biannual CPR., 31. Completes annual education update., 32. Attends and participates in Staff Development meetings., 33. Completes at least 12 hours continuing education annually., 34. Maintains certification, if applicable., 35. Assists in orientation of new personnel to the department as well as developing skills of other staff members when requested or appropriate., 36. Completes in‐services and self‐learn education programs as required., 37. Rotates as needed on all shifts and days as requested; regularly demonstrates flexibility on an “on‐call” basis., 38. Demonstrates good judgement and planning when responding to requests or questions while interacting with physicians, patients, and families., 39. Responds to schedule/assignment changes quickly., 40. Consistently shows good judgement by showing an appreciation of cost and quality., 41. Reports any changes in the patient’s condition to appropriate personnel., 42.
