Job Description The Facilities Management Technician (Maintenance) supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the Monell Chemical Senses Center through routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities. This hands-on role ensures that facilities, infrastructure, and building systems are properly maintained to support scientific research, administrative operations, and institutional activities. The Facilities Management Technician works collaboratively with Facilities Management leadership, colleagues, and external vendors to address maintenance needs, respond to service requests, and uphold institutional standards for safety, compliance, and service excellence. Key Responsibilities * Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance across facilities, including laboratories, offices, common areas, mechanical spaces, and support areas. * Conduct general maintenance and repairs in areas such as carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, painting, HVAC support, and building systems. * Respond promptly to maintenance requests and work orders, prioritizing tasks based on safety, urgency, and operational impact. * Assist with event, meeting, and special project setup and breakdown, including furniture moves and space reconfiguration. * Monitor building conditions and proactively identify maintenance issues, safety hazards, or equipment concerns. * Support compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, maintaining clean, orderly, and hazard-free workspaces. * Coordinate with and support external vendors by providing access, monitoring work, and communicating issues to Facilities Management leadership. * Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, materials used, and maintenance activities. * Assist with seasonal and cyclical maintenance tasks, including weather-related preparation and response. * Follow institutional policies, safety procedures, and best practices at all times. * Perform other related duties as assigned in support of institutional operations. QualificationsRequired * High school diploma or equivalent. * Minimum of five (5) years of experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related trade. * Demonstrated working knowledge of general maintenance practices, tools, and equipment. * Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic repairs across multiple building systems. * Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. * Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. * Clear communication skills and a service-oriented approach. * Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or respond to emergencies as needed. * Commitment to safety, compliance, and institutional standards. * Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and required screenings. Preferred * Trade certification or technical training in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or a related field. * Experience in an academic, research, healthcare, or nonprofit environment. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Physical Requirements * Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the campus for extended periods. * Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. * Ability to climb ladders, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and work in confined or elevated spaces. * Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental and weather conditions. * Manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment. Work Environment * Fully on-site position. * Regular exposure to mechanical spaces, maintenance equipment, and tools. * Occasional exposure to noise, dust, temperature variations, and construction environments. * Evening, weekend, or emergency response work may be required based on institutional needs.
