Job Description Title: American Sign Language Interpreter Length of assignment: Shift: Minimum guarantee: Location: Position Type: SPED: Classified Positions / Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Summary: This position interprets for hearing-impaired students using various sign systems, such as PSE, SEE, and/or ASL. Responsibilities include facilitating communication between hearing-impaired students and teachers and hearing students in a classroom setting, and providing interpreting services at school assemblies and other special events. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Accompany hearing-impaired students to classes; interpret teacher instructions and lectures using sign language., • Ensure student understanding of teacher communication; repeat interpretation as requested., • Interpret auditory responses and communications by other students or presenters., • Facilitate student understanding of group interaction., • Interpret soundtracks from films and tapes., • Voice interpret signed responses for teachers or hearing students as needed., • Assist teachers in understanding verbal responses from students., • Communicate with teachers regarding student progress and concerns., • Interpret school events such as assemblies, field trips, and special events., • Interpret during meetings, conferences, or testing when required., • Serve as a member of the District Interpreter Services team., • High School Diploma or equivalent, • Two (2) years of college-level coursework, • Completion of a two-year sign language interpreter training program, • Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) with CI/CT certification, or Level 4 or 5 from NAD, • Role of an Educational Interpreter within the educational team, • Deaf culture, • School board policies and procedures Ability To, • Use ASL, SEE, and PSE effectively, • Organize and perform job responsibilities independently, • Pay close attention to detail, • Speak, read, and follow written and verbal instructions, • Maintain safety and security within work routines, • Build positive relationships with staff and service providers, • Work collaboratively and promote teamwork, • Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct, • Interact effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural environment, • Frequent sitting up to 30 minutes, • Frequent handling/grasping, • Near and far vision required, • Ability to stand, walk, lift, bend, squat, and kneel, • 90% indoor, 10% outdoor, • Exposure to noise, weather, and infectious diseases, • May assist with unruly or volatile students, • Typically school days, with occasional evenings for events #ZRHC Company DescriptionFounded in 2002 by three former Monster.com executives; TalentBurst is an award-winning full-service Staffing Firm working directly with Fortune 500 companies in the US and Canada.
