Job Description ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH & JUSTICE Position Type: Exempt, Salaried Category: Regular, Full-Time Reports to: Director of Outreach & Justice ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW: St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is an open community of Christians helping people find and give hope through Jesus Christ. MINISTRY & POSITION OVERVIEW: St. Luke’s has a dynamic Outreach & Justice Ministry, with an array of community partnerships, large scale serving events, active advocacy committees, and strategies to make a difference in our community through both systems changes and individual connection. We accomplish this work by generating resources, mobilizing volunteers, educating our community, nurturing community partnerships, and advocating for marginalized neighbors. SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE In 2–3 years, success in this role will include: • Outreach & Justice serving as a significant contributor to St. Luke’s vision by engaging people through meaningful service, advocacy, and community connection., • Strong volunteer leadership structures that empower congregation members to lead ministry initiatives alongside staff., • Clear pathways for participants, volunteers, and community members to deepen their engagement with St. Luke’s., • Strategic community partnerships that strengthen the church’s impact throughout Indianapolis., • Sustainable ministry systems that support growth, measurable outcomes, and long-term effectiveness. RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership & Ministry Development • Support and advance the vision of St. Luke’s and the Outreach & Justice Ministry through strategic leadership, ministry development, and effective execution., • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Director of Outreach & Justice, helping develop initiatives, partnerships, and engagement opportunities that advance the ministry’s mission., • Lead ministry initiatives from planning through implementation and evaluation, identifying opportunities to strengthen impact, systems, and volunteer engagement. Community Engagement & Partnerships • Cultivate and maintain relationships with community organizations, nonprofit partners, advocacy groups, and community leaders to further the mission of St. Luke’s., • Represent St. Luke’s in community collaborations and demonstrate an active commitment to being an anti-racist, affirming, and justice-seeking church. Volunteer Recruitment & Leadership Development • Recruit, equip, develop, and support volunteer leaders and teams through effective onboarding, communication, engagement, and leadership development systems., • Cultivate meaningful relationships with congregation members and create opportunities for increased participation and ownership in ministry. Program & Event Leadership • Oversee the planning and execution of ministry programs and events, including initiatives such as Freedom School, Hub for Hope, I Love My City, advocacy efforts, and community partnerships., • Coordinate logistics, timelines, volunteers, communication, and evaluation for ministry activities., • Collaborate with Communications, Facilities, Worship, IT, Hospitality, and other departments to ensure successful ministry execution. Systems, Administration & Metrics • Create and manage systems that track volunteer engagement, participation, and ministry impact while identifying opportunities to increase involvement and deepen engagement., • Maintain accurate ministry records, volunteer databases, reports, and related administrative processes., • Develop and implement follow-up pathways that help participants move toward deeper engagement, discipleship, and leadership., • Ensure ministry calendars, website content, registration systems, and communications remain current, accurate, and user-friendly. LUKE’S STAFF VALUES All St. Luke’s staff are expected to model and embody the church’s staff values: • Courageous Collaboration — Better Together, • Growth & Learning — 1% Better Every Day, • Holistic Health — Healthy Leaders Lead Healthy, • Intentional Community — You Belong Here, • Hopeful Presence — God Is Able QUALIFICATIONS • Demonstrate a vibrant Christian faith and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church., • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in humanities, social sciences, nonprofit leadership, ministry, community development, or a related field preferred., • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in ministry, nonprofit leadership, volunteer management, community engagement, or a related field., • Demonstrated experience recruiting, developing, and leading volunteer teams., • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives, stakeholders, and deadlines simultaneously., • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills., • Experience building relationships across diverse communities preferred., • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
