Job Description The Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police Department is responsible for protecting and serving nearly 10,000 people in the Boroughs of North Braddock, East Pittsburgh, Braddock, and Rankin located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania just 11 miles east of Pittsburgh. Applications accepted until 04/30/2026 Minimum Eligibility Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field preferred,, • Minimum of five (5) consecutive years of experience as a full-time certified law enforcement officer,, • Valid PA driver’s license or ability to obtain,, • A current Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) Act 120 certification or ability to obtain is required for employment,, • Successful Background Investigation, • Starting Pay $85,394.40, • 100% Employer paid medical, dental, and vision benefits, • Paid time off, • Pension Plan Eligible applicants who wish to participate in the promotional process must submit an application on our website at Position Summary The Police Sergeant is responsible for carrying out the functions of protection of life and property, preservation of peace and good order of the community, enhancement of positive community engagement initiatives, enforcement of laws and department policies/procedures, public safety, investigative work, and other related duties. The successful candidate will be responsible for the prevention of illegal, unsafe, or undesirable activity and regulatory violations through patrol, education, inspection, and the deterrent effect of enforcement. Police Sergeants will also be expected to enforce Federal, State, and local laws, through investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of violators. Position Duties • Supervises, directs, plans and monitors the work of assigned Police Officers and civilian personnel; assigns duties to Police Officers., • Ensures that non-emergency operations are handled efficiently and safely as explained in Department rules and regulations., • Ensures that incidents and special operations are handled efficiently and safely as explained in Department rules and regulations to ensure the preservation of life and property., • Allocates personnel to ensure that employees are appropriately assigned to tasks; prepares personnel for special circumstances., • Observes subordinate performance to identify strengths and areas of needed improvement; conducts formal and informal performance evaluation sessions and provides feedback to subordinates for recognition of performance strengths and weaknesses., • Interprets, enforces and explains rules and regulations that govern the activities of Department personnel., • Ensures that Department personnel are properly trained to carry out their assigned duties., • Reviews, prepares and/or maintains logs, records, memos, reports and other field and administrative documents and correspondence used in the course of performing the job; reviews documents prepared by subordinates or other personnel for completeness and accuracy; reviews and authorizes personnel requests and integrates information from multiple sources into summary documents., • Communicates or coordinates activities with Department personnel and individuals from other agencies to accomplish work objectives and discuss issues of mutual concern., • Performs and supervises all police activities conducted to ensure the safe and legal operation of vehicles on the road (e.g., assists motorists and civilians, enforces traffic laws, manages accident scenes, assists accident victims, identifies and eliminates public safety hazards, etc.)., • Performs and supervises police activities occurring while responding to all types of offenses (e.g., crimes in progress, civil matters, domestic violence, property crimes, serious crimes, etc.)., • Performs and supervises police activities occurring as part of initial criminal investigations (e.g., obtaining and analyzing information, collecting physical evidence, participating in the judicial/administrative process, etc.)., • Performs and supervises police activities occurring for the purpose of apprehending, restraining, arresting, transporting and detaining suspects to be taken into custody according to the law and Department policy; including NCIC and CLEAN inquiries and activities performed in the process of searching vehicles, persons and/or premises for weapons, fruits of a crime, or contraband in order to effect arrest, protect self and the public and/or to obtain evidence., • Performs activities that have an impact on the Department's image in the community by virtue of interactions with individual members of the public, community organizations, and the media (e.g., provides routine information and assistance to public, makes informal referrals to other agencies in order to assist public; responds to questions and/or provides documentation to media in compliance with Department policy, etc.)., • Participates in court cases, interacts with attorneys and assists with the facilitation of the legal process., • Participates in activities to keep apprised of job-related developments in laws, technology, policies and procedures as well as to enhance job-related knowledge, skills and abilities (e.g., reading internal memos and bulletins, reading external publications, participating in training/certification drills and classes, attending outside conferences, seminars, and courses, etc.)., • Works shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned or required. Considerable knowledge of: • Firearms, self-defense and crowd control, motor vehicle code, crimes code, and criminal justice procedures., • Withstand the physical strain, emotional stress and personal hazards faced by a Police Officer when performing activities on a routine basis and/or when involved in major police problems., • Deal with situations requiring quick and accurate decision-making., • Organize thoughts and to express them in a clear and logical manner, and to quickly and accurately comprehend another's meaning., • Supervise assigned subordinate employees., • Plan, monitor and evaluate the work of self and others., • Effectively communicate community oriented policing philosophy to subordinates and the general public., • Establish and maintain cooperative and constructive working relationships on an individual and group basis with supervisors, associates, subordinates and the general public., • Counsel others, to consider the feelings and needs of others, and to respect the views of others., • Research and seek out information, to include all relevant information, to consider all the facts, to distinguish between important and unimportant information, and to omit unimportant and irrelevant information., • Critically evaluate a situation, to comprehend a situation in its proper perspective, to evaluate alternative solutions, to consider the implications of problems and solutions, and to arrive at a sound decision., • Define the tasks and goals which must be accomplished, to provide a framework or strategy for accomplishing these tasks/goals, to establish a time line for completion of these tasks/goals, and to identify obstacles to the accomplishment of these tasks/goals., • Plan for the effective use of manpower, to assign individuals to those tasks and duties for which they are most or uniquely suited, and to ensure all tasks are assigned with minimal duplication of effort., • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing., • Establish and maintain records and to prepare accurate reports., • Lead, motivate, supervise and direct the work of all assigned subordinate employees., • Use and care for firearms., • Work outdoors in all weather., • Maintain MPOETC ACT 120 Certification and CLEAN/NCIC Certification throughout employment, • Maintain a valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license throughout employment.
