SUMMARY OF ROLE: Imagine building algorithms that directly save lives. At Element Science, we're on a mission to change how sudden cardiac events are detected, treated, and prevented, starting with our breakthrough wearable technology. We are looking for a hands-on Principal Algorithms & Data Science Engineer to drive the development of algorithms for our life-saving wearable medical devices and our Cloud data services. These algorithms span a wide range of product facets, from machine learning algorithms that drive the core life-saving functionality of our wearable devices to field data analysis algorithms that provide critical insight into product usage, patient experience, potential improvements, and new products. The ideal candidate thrives in a commercial start-up environment that is scaling rapidly, can help drive strategic planning of algorithm-related business needs, and can execute algorithm design, development, and testing. This is a hybrid role based in our Potrero Hill, San Francisco, California office. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Lead the ideation, design, development, and testing of algorithms used to control life-saving wearable medical devices., • Lead the ideation, design, development, and testing of algorithms used to analyze data uploaded from wearable devices to the Cloud., • Contribute to strategic planning of product improvements, new product concepts, and algorithm development needs across the business., • Define technical content for product design including design requirements and specifications, verification and validation plans, protocols, and reports, and risk management files., • Perform hands-on algorithm development, including training and testing, from exploratory engineering testing and formal validation testing. Author test protocols and reports and obtain cross-functional alignment., • Collaborate with the Software Engineering and Information Technology teams to define Cloud-based data architectures for wearable device data and business operations data, including storage, transformations, and interfaces with machine learning algorithms., • Drive the implementation of scalable methods, processes, and tools that accelerate machine learning algorithm development and testing., • Provide algorithm and data science support during clinical studies and commercial release of new products., • Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, Physics, Math, or related field; advanced degree preferred., • 8-12 years minimum of relevant industry experience. Experience in medical device industry preferred., • Strong understanding of machine learning concepts such as model selection, data selection, training methods, etc., • Strong experience applying advanced mathematical techniques (e.g., linear algebra, statistics, gradient descent, etc.) to solve engineering problems., • Experience in leading algorithms development from feasibility through product commercialization., • Excellent coding skills using Python. Familiarity with MATLAB preferred. Familiarity with C/C++ a plus., • Experience leading projects within a cross-functional team environment., • Experience with physiological signals such as ECG, PPG, EEG, etc. a plus., • Experience with digital signal processing a plus., • Experience with AWS Cloud tools for large data processing a plus., • Experience with predictive analysis in healthcare a plus.
