Job DescriptionAbout KIND Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children. Position Summary KIND seeks a Senior Paralegal to support KIND’s delivery of legal services through a range of case preparation, legal research, and related tasks in support of the legal strategy for the client. The Senior Paralegal also supports Paralegal(s) and other non-attorney staff and interns as needed with training in collaboration with the Supervising Paralegal, Staff Attorneys, Senior Attorneys and Managing Attorneys. This position is contingent upon continued funding.Essential Functions • Onboards and trains, paralegals, including conducting initial and ongoing training for paralegal staff; troubleshoots, reviews, and provides quality assurance of referrals, filings, and pleadings., • Conducts legal research, completes immigration benefit forms, and drafts affidavits and motions for immigration and state court proceedings in consultation with attorneys., • Ensures consistent, accurate, and timely file maintenance and data entry into our case management system., • In coordination with attorneys, assists in clients’ preparation for hearings and adjudicatory interviews., • Mentors undergraduate interns, as needed, and assists with training of legal interns, as needed., • Assists with the professional development of paralegals and other staff in collaboration with the supervising paralegal, attorneys, and in consultation with KIND’s National Training and Technical Assistance Team., • Tracks and ensures referral and intake metrics achievement under grants and contracts in consultation with attorneys., • Supports paralegals and non-attorney staff in the consistent and quality provision of intake interviews, phone screenings, intake memos, and presentation of cases to attorneys; conducts intakes and phone screenings as needed., • Assists with pro bono training, including non-attorney pro bono team members, through the preparation of training materials, provision of discrete training on topics such as translation, and other related tasks., • Assess cases for social service needs and assist with social services referrals; liaise with Social Services Coordinators to achieve programmatic goals where legal services/social services intersect., • For direct representation cases, serves as point of contact for clients, proactively ensuring that case files and case management system reflect current contact information, case developments, and updates on child’s wellbeing and service needs; ensures regular check-ins with the child are conducted in consultation with attorney, particularly in cases in which case adjudication is delayed due to retrogression or otherwise; and keeps counsel apprised of updates and issues needing follow-up., • For pro bono cases, assists in case audit efforts, and ensures that updates from pro bono team regarding legal case and child’s wellbeing are timely recorded in case management system; assists in targeted pro bono team support including provision of relevant samples, and guidance and training resources., • Provide interpretation and translation services for the field office. Qualifications and Requirements, • Graduate degree preferred; Undergraduate degree with 1 year of relevant experience; high school diploma with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience., • Must be fluent in English and Spanish (for direct communication with the children we serve and their caregivers, the majority of whom are Spanish speaking)., • Minimum of 4 years of experience working with children, preferably at-risk youth, immigrants or refugee children, and/or working with vulnerable populations, survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma., • Minimum of 4 years of experience in humanitarian-based immigration work, including conducting legal intakes, assessing legal claims, and assisting attorneys on legal applications to obtain immigration benefits., • Minimum of 3 years of experience in working independently on projects and/or programs, demonstrating initiative and willingness to learn and contribute thought leadership and innovative strategies to the work., • Minimum of 1 year experience with preparing and delivering presentations on legal and know-your-rights information to immigrant audiences, preferably families and children., • Excellent organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail., • Strong cultural competency and cross-cultural communication skills., • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (such as Teams, Excel, etc.)., • Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities., • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; ability to prioritize tasks and delegate as appropriate., • Ability to multitask and work with a sense of urgency in a dynamic, fast-paced environment., • Committed to practicing and supporting wellbeing and a work-home life balance.

Engagement & AssessmentProvide trauma-informed case management utilizing motivational interviewing and strength-based techniques to assigned participants.Engage professionally and compassionately with participants in all settings and environments.Write clear, objective, and accurate case notes of significant interactions in participant files, including stability plans, measurement scales, leases, and all other required forms and paperwork including logs, records, reports, and statistics, as requested.Perform documentation (following DAP protocol) and input data in the Clarity Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and other organizational data and case management systems. Identify barriers and steps necessary to overcome obstacles to successful program participation. Hoarding and housekeeping support and interventionsAssess participant histories and resource/support needs (e.g., food, health, transportation, CPS APS engagement etc.) and opportunities (e.g., family, friends).Screen individuals for program eligibility (this may include collaboration with referring agencies). Complete a needs assessment, services acknowledgment, and orientation to the program.Assess eligibility for permanent housing resources, such as deposit/move-in financial assistance, rapid rehousing, affordable housing, and permanent supportive housing.Develop a plan with Program Manager to utilize flexible program-based participant relocation and assistance funds in a way that emphasizes equitability not equality.Identify need for interim or bridge housing, link as requested and available.Establish goals and objectives, monitor achievements through regular meetings and case consultations with referral partners, as needed or required contractually.Provide information, referrals, and direct advocacy as needed, utilizing both internal and external resources. (landlords, rental assistance, Veteran programs, supportive guidance on housing selection)Link participants with services intended to address significant barriers to housing stability, such as mental health services, chemical dependency services, primary health services, legal services, Veteran support services, employment and/or educational supports for adults and youth (where applicable).Build and maintain positive relationships with a network of community providers and services to address and advocate for participant needs. In supporting housing stability and retention, work with property management, supervisor and participants in successful tenancy practices and resolutions.Work with program management on situation assessment and follow-up. Work with supervisor to devise and implement corrective action plans for participants failing to meet goals.May be required to assist management in running monthly, quarterly, and/or annual reports (e.g., HMIS).Daily activities are varied, and the day may be interrupted by emergencies or other daily events.Mediate conflicts provide de-escalation and crisis intervention. About the RoleThe Pastry Chef is a key member of our galley team, responsible for preparing all baked goods and desserts served onboard — from freshly baked breads and pastries to plated desserts, teatime treats, and special occasion items. This hands-on role plays a central part in shaping the guest dining experience, delivering consistent quality and presentation while also supporting dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-sensitive items. Working closely with the Head Chef, the Pastry Chef manages daily production, assists with inventory and ordering, and ensures sanitation and food safety standards are met at all times. While the primary focus is baking and pastry, this role also contributes to broader galley operations, including cleaning, provisioning, and occasional support with crew meals or dishwashing. This position is ideal for someone with strong baking and pastry skills, excellent time management, and a passion for working in dynamic, team-driven environments. Pastry Chefs work approximately 12 hours per day on a rotational schedule of 8 weeks on / 4 weeks off. WORK SCHEDULEChefs work an average of 12 hours per day, every day, with no days off throughout your 8-week rotation onboard. LIVING CONDITIONS Crew quarters are compact and shared — you will bunk with one or two roommates for the full duration of your rotation, with minimal personal space. The vessel operates in remote locations with limited or no port access between expeditions, so cell service and internet may be unavailable for extended periods. You must bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medications, as refills cannot be obtained while underway. This lifestyle suits people who are adaptable, self-sufficient, and genuinely energized by close-knit team environments and remote travel. If those conditions sound like a challenge rather than an adventure, this may not be the right fit. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is a physically demanding role performed in a moving marine environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and climb steep interior stairs repeatedly throughout a 12-hour shift — including during periods of significant vessel motion. The employee must regularly lift and carry items up to 50 pounds. Work rotates continuously across cabin cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, and food service, often without extended breaks. Work is performed in confined spaces and high-humidity environments including the galley. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Food Preparation • Participates in the actual baking of guest breakfast, lunch, and dinner breads (both Sweet and Savory), as well as any spreads, jams or butter accompanying breads. As well as any baked goods for meal periods., • Prepares, and plates guest dinner, and lunch desserts. Including mise en place, sauce and garnish., • Prepares mid- morning, and high tea pastries and baked goods and any out of the blue and ‘welcome’ baked good., • Ability to prepare and produce baked goods and desserts as per required dietary restrictions (GF, Vegan, kosher, lactose free)., • May assist in production of crew meal., • Works with Head Chef on inventory and baking/pastry orders. Cleaning, • Responsible for all baking and pastry area food service sanitary compliance. Including, but not limited to, all equipment and countertop equipment, deck, bulkheads and overheads., • Respects and follows proper FIFO for all baking and pastry pantry., • Helps maintain organization in the walk in cooler and freezer, and respects the designated areas of storage within the walk-ins, • Helps maintain the cleanliness of the galley area and food storage rooms., • Adheres to all CDC Vessel Sanitation Program and Health Canada requirements., • Assists in dishwashing as needed and/or assigned.
