Job Description Marine Designer Job Title: Marine Designer Job Purpose and Position Overview: The Marine Designer is a critical member of the design and procurement teams, responsible for developing vessel structures, systems, and outfitting details. This role emphasizes the creation and maintenance of detailed 3D models and accurate bills of material to support efficient vessel construction. The designer will apply practical marine knowledge and CAD skills to support vessel layout, outfitting, and systems design in close coordination with engineers, production staff, and vendors. As part of a fast-paced, deadline-driven team, you must thrive under pressure while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will be highly creative and possess excellent time management skills, take pride in delivering exceptional work, and consistently demonstrate reliability and a strong work ethic. Key Responsibilities: • Use Rhino (or similar CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) to develop detailed 3D models and 2D production drawings., • Develop arrangements, equipment layouts, and production documentation for vessel systems, structural components, and outfitting., • Interpret design proposals, general arrangements, and customer specifications to translate design intent into practical production-ready models., • Assist in the design of hulls, decks, superstructures, and related outfitting to ensure functionality, safety, and ease of construction., • Lay out and detail system components, such as propulsion lines, HVAC, piping (bilge, ballast, firefighting, fuel, potable water), and auxiliary systems., • Coordinate with engineers on the specification and installation of mechanical equipment, including engines, pumps, shafts, and propellers., • Support testing, installation, and maintenance planning by producing accurate design documentation., • Collaborate with procurement to ensure selected materials and components meet design and budget goals., • Regularly engage with production teams to ensure design intent aligns with practical construction methods and constraints. Preferred Skills and Qualifications: • Demonstrated expertise with Rhino 3D and 2D drafting software. Experience with other platforms (e.g., ShipConstructor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Orca3D) is a plus., • Strong understanding of shipyard processes, fabrication methods, and marine system integration., • Familiarity with class society requirements and marine industry standards (e.g., ABS, DNV)., • Ability to read and interpret schematics, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and technical drawings., • Practical experience designing or working on small to medium-sized commercial or recreational vessels., • Strong spatial reasoning and mechanical aptitude., • Basic knowledge of marine electrical and propulsion systems is a plus. Physical Requirements: The work environment is a dynamic, fast-paced shipyard with moderate to loud noise levels due to ongoing production activities. Job duties are performed in an office setting as well as in production areas and onboard vessels and may require: • Ability to work in shipyard production areas and onboard vessels., • Ability to walk to and from job sites and climb inclined stairways, • Availability for shifts longer than 8 hours and/or weekend work if needed., • Frequent activities including walking, standing, sitting, using hands and arms, reaching, talking & hearing., • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.
